I was watching warlords... looks fun.

The problem with having spaceships take off like an airplane is that they need to travel to a few km/s in order to stay in orbit. This speed is almost unreachable in the atmosphere, and it requires a lot of fuel to attain. This means that, afaik current space ship design has them take off...
