The companion system relies too heavily on telling me how the characters feel, rather than showing me. If there were some kind of consequences to my actions, that would be nice. But I guess it would too much work to actually program engaging character development.

I think you put more thought into it than they did during development, CT. I really feel like the development team came up with some cool ideas (like Nick Valentine), but never coordinated them into a cohesive whole.
