Goddammit, I hate being wrong - showrunners fucked New Vegas

They quite literally have no clue... (Firstly they assume it's Earth, and that it would recover like Earth). They do not realize that to progress it back to normality is the death of the setting. It has always been discussed that the war would have to happen again if they ever recovered from it...

This might not be the most blasphemous game anymore...

Well... It's been like that since FO3 released. FO3 has always been —essentially FOBOS2— in almost every discernible way.

Would you have rather gotten Van Buren but no New Vegas?

Fallout's opening intro music is quite apropos in describing its own fate, isn't it?

Would you have rather gotten Van Buren but no New Vegas?

Yes. I would rather of had Van Buren than Bethesda period. I would probably have preferred whatever Troika was cooking up instead of Van Buren; it would surely have quickly become Fallout 3, had they acquired the licensing.

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

It's beyond goofy to expect (or actually implement) a wasteland or salt-flat with interesting landmarks and side quests; it's a true to life trudge through a lot of nothing. That's just arguing our own points back at us as though it somehow puts us in the wrong. Nobody has suggested players...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

Is this about the suggested use of procedural terrain above? It is an egregious mistake to assume the intention is to rely upon AI to build a game world. The intention is to use AI to fill in necessary space on demand that is not worth having a human spend time on it.

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

What? We are not talking about the same topic. I am not talking about any in-game consequences; why are you? I am talking about a UI issue; faulty UI menu; developer brain farting...in general, or in the case of NV specifically with the conditional absence of map travel. This makes no sense...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

Then it's poor design to force the player to waste their time unnecessarily; when the walk can be simply assumed. That's not a positive effect, it's detrimental cosmetics—not during combat or attempted retreat, but when there are no hostilities or contested activity, the actions can just be...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

What are you talking about? Preparedness is not the issue [~how could it be?], but the consequences are the PC's own; sure they're kicking themselves on the walk back, or in NV it takes them three times as long, but that's no excuse to inflict this nuisance upon the player. No. Not a one of...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

... and yet if you don't have any of those in the moment, you have a 15 minute realtime walk to go get them. :irked: That's lunacy. Imagine if Fallout pulled that on the player at Vault 15, or at West-Tek for not bringing a rope; making the trek map-screen by map-screen rather than by clicking...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

That's never been an issue for me; so long as the generated land becomes permanent on the map—it's not nothing, it's the game world. Arcanum does this btw. I heartily disagree with all three of these. Fast Travel [so called] should be entirely a user preference...provided that there are equal...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

... Or Diablo. For that matter even Fallout —though it's by no means a great example. In Fallout 1 it presents a generic (and mostly static) encounter zone that matched whatever the overland terrain that was under foot at the time. Arcanum had a realtime map that (so I have read) took around...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

Also... Mr. Howard himself recounted cutting about half of the game-world out of the final release. Myself, I would have liked to see a procedural overland map akin to Fallout 1 & 2 —in a style reminiscent of Skyrim; designed for the same purpose as the original games. Such a system would have...

My two cents: How bethesda should unfuck itself.

The above summarizes the general advice posted on the Bethesda forums by the Fallout fans, prior to, and following the release of FO3; mid 2007-09. (Especially the filling of the empty space with proceduraly generated content). The only thing they listened to (and used it as if their own idea)...

    Unpopular Opinion and Discussion thread

Esther Williams, Anny Ondra, to name but two. Joan Blondell for that matter. @Topic, I prefer the first Dune film to the most recent; also the sand worm looked better in the first film, and did not look like a direct ripoff/recoloring of the D&D Purple worm.

A similarity, (long known) is that FO3 is essentially [and could pass for being] a FOBOS sequel.
