Fair enough :) Personally, I like the achievement system. I'm not someone who's all about their gamerscore but I do like the fact that I've gotten a lot more mileage out of some of my games, simply because some of the acheivements are fun to get or require playing the game in a different way...

To be fair, you can turn off the acheivement notifications, at least on the 360 anyway.
