Before you know it, it will be Jake Ryan and Ferris time. Don't forget The Princess Bride, Legend, Labyrinth, and, last but not least, The Neverending Story. "Bastian, say my name!" BTW, Cimm...if you haven't read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline yet, you should check it out. The movie...

8.2. Not the best Bowie song I've ever heard, but as with most if his music, I still like it. This is Mystery Mountain by Journey, from their first album in 1975. Long before Steve Perry joined and they turned into a pop/arena rock band, they were a crazy 1970s prog rock band.

I didn't know there was a documentary about Milius. I know he's a crazy guy who doesn't exactly fit into the Hollywood circle-jerk. Plus he wrote the screenplay for (and came up with the name for) Apocalypse Now! before he co-wrote the Conan the Barbarian screenplay with Oliver Stone, and then...

Oh my god... Just What I've Been Waiting For All These Years! This could be a real, legitimate disaster. The only way I'd be interested in a new Conan movie is if they let John Milius write and direct it.

Pardon the Mad Med tie-in, but this was the best clip I could find of a classic musical:

Ha! I remember that one! 5/10, but hilarious nonetheless. One Piece At A Time by Johnny Cash, 1976:

I actually caught the last 20 minutes or so of the original last night. Pretty hard to compete with that, even if it looks a bit dated now. The whole feel of it is different - almost horror instead of just sci-fi/action.

Which operating system do you use?

XP for my games, mostly. I also have LinuxMint 17 on my laptop and a nice old cheese grater case MacPro with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I've been considering upgrading all my OS's for some time now, but I haven't bothered to pull the trigger yet. At some point I'll have to in order to do something...

Maybe I'll check that out, since it's Michael Mann. The ads I saw did nothing to entice me to see it. I'm thinking about going to see Tomorrowland, since it's a) directed by Brad Bird and b) tanking at the box office. Again, the ads don't make it look very enticing.

Here's my quickie, no-spoilers Fury Road review based on seeing it this afternoon: It's no secret that I hated the trailer for Fury Road. In fact, the trailer is actually one of the reasons I decided I ought to see it: I had to reconcile my negative impressions with the good buzz the movie's...

How about a "no stimpacks" run? Super Stims are okay, but no regular stims.

FWIW, I sincerely hope my pessimism has been dead wrong. It would be a nice surprise, for once. Of the first three movies I like Mad Max the best. The Road Warrior is a close second, although it's very different from the original. There are some things about Beyond Thunderdome I like a lot...

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/16/arts/music/b-b-king-blues-singer-dies-at-89.html?_r=0 I had the good fortune to see him in concert a couple of times in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He put on a great show both times. The Thrill is Gone!

Essentially, yes. George Miller made the original with $100,000 of his own money. It was a work of passion. The new one is a multi-million-dollar brand exploitation flick. That means the investors expect a solid return on their investment, and it means that Fury Road has the same odds of...

I saw Ex Machina in a theater this afternoon. I liked it quite a lot. Not perfect, but well conceived and well executed in most ways. I kind of hate the title because it sounds really pretentious and it brings to mind the phrase deus ex machina, which has a negative meaning and has nothing to...

It's interesting to see some of those memorable scenes in black and white. It emphasizes how strong Blade Runner's shot composition is generally, and how much it draws on classic 1930s and 1940s Noir for inspiration. It looks better in color though, because the use of color in Blade Runner is...
