Fastest way propably is to finish the Temple of Trials vewy vewy fast and then go to the hunting grounds (NW part of the map). Lots of 'em there. Don't you mean "Where is The Master"? :P

There most definetly are more critter encounters in FOT. If I remember right I've had four or five encounters in the same square in FOT. But true, in FO2 the encounters were more interesting and complex and nicer and better and yaba yaba blah blah blah... peeps
