NMA Fallout: New Vegas Impression Piece

With as late as the review will be I seriously hope the emphasis is more on an analysis of story tropes and mechanics than a "pre-purchase" review.

Wild Wasteland: is it Wild or merely a Waste?

Though the Star wars reference wouldn't have been lost on me I find that approach to humor at odds with what even Fallout 2 offered. The context just doesn't make sense -- you're not on Tatooine and Luke obviously didn't stem from the Fallout wasteland. It's just tagged in there for "lolz" and...

    Will Obsidian make another FO?

Really? I find that very depressing. Like the Dutch Ghost is saying right above me, many of the restrictive elements in the game serve a real design purpose. 'Course, it was only through suffering against such limitations in the early days of PC gaming (pre the easy availability of mod...

Wild Wasteland: is it Wild or merely a Waste?

[Disclaimer: Yeah, I noticed the other thread and even posted in it but, now many days later, I'm still the most recent post.. so here's try two] I'm still a little annoyed that Wild Wasteland was included as a trait and not merely a toggleable world setting like hardcore mode...

It's worth noting that the NPCs in GTA 4 aren't persistent. They despawn and no amount of resource is spent tracking their exploits when you're on the other side of the map. I imagine this plays a very large difference.

Things you *aren't* pleased to see

You a bigot? It's ok if you are, some of my best friends are bigots. Just keep it in the bedroom if you can. I don't want my kids seeing any of that. ;) No, but seriously, you sound like a bigot.

    Fallout 2 for Ubuntu?

I went there ages ago but found it unhelpful: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=319&iTestingId=3348 Again, I tend to be a trial and error kinda guy. I'm only asking since the only way I can test the operation is to first pay $20~ for the privilege of downloading...

Things you *aren't* pleased to see

It was poorly implemented, yes, but I was referring to that minigame for changing the impression people had of your character. Too low an "impression" and an NPC wouldn't want to speak with you. By playing the mini game, or using a spell, you could make NPCs like you more and they would speak to...

    @ Hardcore Fallout 1&2 Fan

Good point. If it had been an entirely new IP then it probably wouldn't have ticked us off so badly. Sadly, since they used the Fallout name, it felt like Todd Howard was slowly violating the corpses of our grandmothers before our very eyes. I still feel it was a step up from Oblivion in...

    Fallout 2 for Ubuntu?

Thanks guys. Little_Robot, did you just download and load the exe's via Wine? Just curious if you had to tinker under the hood (I'm far from a Linux pro). Anyhoo.. thanks again.

    Direction of New Vegas' DLC

I did hit the level cap while playing 3 and it killed my enjoyment of the game. It's not like the story or gameplay, removed from the persistent growth of my character, held any particular charm. It's worth noting that this occurred after exploring 80% of the wasteland but not getting too much...

Difficulty? Help me decided where to start.

Thanks for the thoughts, I'll probably be starting on the hardest difficulty then (mind you, I rarely play combat oriented characters so this *will* be fun :)). As to Oblivion.. well.. the biggest flaw is that they scaled the enemies based on level but levels were gained based on the...

    Fallout 2 for Ubuntu?

Just curious. Anybody know whether it's possible to get Fallout 2 running under Ubuntu? I'd like to install it on a driveless netbook (acer aspire one) which was kicked down to me. However, this means -- in order to try -- I have to purchase a downloadable copy from somewhere. This is all...

    Wild Wasteland (expect spoilers)

So, is this a waste of a trait? Does it net you actual encounters or just obscure references which will probably fly past my head? Anything like the Cafe of Broken Dreams?

    JE Sawyer Formsprings #9

How does any of that make any sense at all? What was that? "Logic and reason," you say? Humm.. something to consider.

Things you *aren't* pleased to see

It's ironic this would be removed by Bethesda as they implemented something similar into the Elder Scrolls titles, even Oblivion. Humm.. I hadn't thought on this before. Nice catch.

Fallout: New Vegas outsells Fallout 3, PS3 fix released

You missed his joke, he appreciates the fact they have no reason for being there. He was saying "despite that logic, since Bethesda is making it, they WILL be there." I've heard New Vegas is less of a shooter (or, at least, can be less of a shooter) than Fallout 3 was. Technically, Fallout 1...

Fallout: New Vegas outsells Fallout 3, PS3 fix released

I respect your logic and agree but I'm pretty sure GTA set the standard here. It will be Fallout 4, much like GTA 4 was really GTA 7.

Anybody waiting for a patch before playing ?

I bought a hard copy version but haven't cracked the case. I'm not explicitly waiting but perhaps subconsciously I am.

Difficulty? Help me decided where to start.

I grew up playing clones of it off and on.. Never really tried the original with any serious intent, though.
