I dont know much about how models for F3 work, but i guess that cylinder axis wasnt aligned properly when creating the object. You may need to move the cylinder axis to be aligned with the main gun axis...hope this help.:D

Try reducing the contrast on the image before running the Nvidia plug. more contrast, more noisy normal map. hope this helps :D Edit: Oh,, and dont use sharpen too much.
