Yeah, I always thought it was really weird that they weren't in fallout 3, especially since there are like 7 different races in Oblivion. I always figured that Bethesda didn't think about it, and Obsidian couldn't do it because they only had Bethesda's assets.

Yes, but the kind of scope they wanted for the story and location would have fitted better into a classic RPG style map like the ones in the first two. I know there's no way we'll ever see another fallout like that though.

I'm not sure about the actual size, but the map in New Vegas feels a lot more compressed than the one in Fallout 3. One of my very few complaints of NV.
