I had the same problem. I couldn't play until I found skins I liked. There are a bunch on ModDB, planetvampire, vampire-network. Also, Wesp5's unofficial patch and Nivea's eye-replacer mod are pretty much mandatory. Lt-47's weapon sounds mod, too.
