Been thinking of buying Syberia 1 and 2.. Anyone played em?

If you need some more opinions, check the Good Old Games subforum on the Syberia series. A lot of people really like the game because of the setting and aesthetics, but to some (me included) the clunky gameplay just made it unbearable. I think I've gotten less patient with games over the years...

Been thinking of buying Syberia 1 and 2.. Anyone played em?

I've only played Syberia 1. If you like walking, walking up stairs, walking down stairs, walking some more, and walking around a lot, Syberia 1 is your cup of tea. The problem is you can't skip screens while walking/running around and whoever made that game was absurdly interested in padding...

Need help buying a Video Cards for 300w Computer

I think the source I've read it was from here. To clarify, the backwards compatibility problem only crops up when trying to use AMD PCIe 3.0 cards in PCIe 1.1 or lower slots. Apparently AMD PCIe 3.0 cards rely on technology that was introduced with PCIe 2.0 and don't function if used in a lower...

Need help buying a Video Cards for 300w Computer

It's really easy to check what power you've got on your 12v rail too; it's right on the side of your PSU. From what I can see on the internet with regards to other Inspiron 530 owners, the default PSU on that unit seems to have a single 18 ampere 12v rail. Don't take my word on that though...

    Stalker.

I don't think CoP was all that much shorter. I played through the entire trilogy a few weeks ago, did every mission, side mission, explored everything, and searched out the majority of stashes. I finished SoC once before though, a few years ago, so this replay obviously went a bit faster. CS and...

    Stalker.

I kinda liked Clear Skies but I don’t know whether that’s just Stockholm syndrome. The game really goes out of its way to make you miserable, but I just couldn’t stop playing, regardless of nigh-invincible machine gun nests, anomalies that eat up artifacts, or pin-point precision grenade spam. I...

When dialogue wheels and romancing options become important

Games have pretty much always treated morality incredibly blandly, in part because morality is pretty difficult to implement with any depth. The dialogue wheel is just another incarnation of such a system. It’s easy to implement and fits well with a controller. A lot of players want...

    Eurozone: Crisis or not?

Oh god no, not this whole spiel here as well. Sander and TheWesDude are pretty much right on track with the problems you get when you start thinking that gold has intrinsic value, or tracks value or inflation as the sole commodity on earth. I'm pretty familiar with the whole 'end of the world!'...

Favorite books / What are you reading?

Finally read Catch-22. Had some difficulty at first grasping the style of the book. After I got the hang of the (seeming) internal contradictions I really started to enjoy the book. The last few chapters stand in stark contrast to the rest of the book, but are nonetheless very good, just in...

Hell is not frozen yet! (Diablo 3)

I only got rares from the SK, and the first time through, with my monk, only one to boot. For some reason I'm starting to think my first playthrough was cursed or something. I didn't get anything fun in that run. No loot-goblins, no jar of souls, not even a single random encounter outside of the...

Hell is not frozen yet! (Diablo 3)

Just finished the Demon Hunter playthrough. All in all, much, much more fun than the monk, and even more Diablo'y for some reason. In comparison, playing a monk was pretty boring. The Demon Hunter at least has a clearly defined play style. Stay ranged, snipe, root enemies, and do a heck of a...

Hell is not frozen yet! (Diablo 3)

Even on normal in Diablo 2 I used to at least have to be somewhat careful when fighting elites and/or bosses. True, the only real 'oh shit!' moments came on higher difficulty levels (and especially with those electricity elites) but so far D3 isn't just easy, it's like 3 difficulty levels below...

Hell is not frozen yet! (Diablo 3)

I've just played the entire beta with a monk. Incredibly boring. And for some reason my monk was wielding weapons all the time, which disappeared whenever he did any attack. Then I tried a demon hunter. Seems a lot more fun than the monk. But all in all, I get no soul from this game. It...

Legend of Grimrock, old school dungeon crawler RPG

A ranged rogue on the back lines is somewhat possible if, counter-intuitively, you stack him up with str. There are no hit/miss mechanics for ranged weapons, they always hit. But they don't get bonus damage from dex, at all, so apart from evasion, dex is useless for a ranged character. Str...

General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

I loved Gothic 1, 2, the gold edition. Few other games do so well at creating atmosphere. Walking around the Old Camp in the evening, seeing people play the guitar/lute, people smoking; heck, it already had what The Elder Scrolls series wanted so badly and then had to reinvent worse and call it...

    Asbestos Religion Thread

Euh, just to chime in on the Cathars. Ladurie's Montaillou is, by now, somewhat outdated. It's still a great read, but the original edition is from 1975 and that's not particularly cutting edge. A good work is Malcolm Lambert, The Cathars (Malden 1998). If you want a somewhat different...

    Mass Effect 3 discussion

Well where else are gaming review sites supposed to get their revenue? I keep reading indignant responses to the state of gaming reviews, but how else apart from advertising revenue are they supposed to carry on a business? You might say that they could keep making revenue even while staying...

    Kingdoms of Amalur

Yep, that's the most prominent complaint around, and also my own - that the game is just far too easy. Never mind potion spamming, hardly anything can get me so far as to make me drop my health in the first place. Before I got massively overpowered I really enjoyed the game. But after that point...

General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

I'm finally succeeding with my Uesigi game on hard. After a while I got used to seeing full stacks, especially because I found out that it meant the enemy usually had empty cities after they got their stack wiped against my walls (Takeda was an exception I found). To bait an enemy into attacking...

General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

Total War Shogun 2. I played the TW series from the first Shogun to the second Medieval, then I skipped Empire and Napoleon. I really like it so far. Played one game on normal, then a second one on hard. The difference is enormous. On normal, with the Hattori clan, I had some difficulties...
