PARPG - a nuclear winter RPG moving towards a 2nd techdemo

I'm still here! But while I like doing the game design PARPG, I cannot do it ALL myself. I am committed to working on this project at least for another year.

PARPG - nuclear winter RPG in the making

Eating and Drinking: Current plan is that you don't really need to drink. Most months there is plenty of snow. Food will be important but handled abstractly - if you have "food" in inventory and/or some food source, then you will automatically eat it. You might have to set yourself on...

PARPG - a nuclear winter RPG moving towards a 2nd techdemo

I really really wanted to make this game permadeath non-optional. However, I don't think it's at all feasible with the deadliness of the combat system I am planning to put in place. (Not to mention the outrage against the idea). I think the other design considerations (non-linearity...

    V13 MMO

I never played UO (or WOW for that matter)... but this is the strangest definition of patch I have ever heard. I guess the bottom line is - if UO was patched to be more popular = more $$, you can hardly blame them. They are a private, for-profit corp after all. Blame Capitalism!

    Role Playing in the Wastes

methinks the advocates of "true" roleplaying games should find a better way / different words to describe what they are talking about. Language evolves, and sticking to your guns about this (BTW, I agree with y'all) just makes you seem bitter, petty and out of touch.

    Role Playing in the Wastes

I think there is an interesting point here. I was debating a similar mechanism for PARPG (http://parpg.fifengine.de) - but how to make it actually effect the character in game. Silly GOAT exams aside - the idea was that goals and motivations would be tangibles set by player at the...

PARPG - a nuclear winter RPG moving towards a 2nd techdemo

Funny link. But I meant, just for the record, "Snow world" = Snow _map_ in the game.

PARPG - a nuclear winter RPG moving towards a 2nd techdemo

Hmmm... how do people grow food in snow world? How about... Greenhouses! Or, cold adapted crops (only "slightly" more plausible than giant scorpions) Also, "snow world" doesn't necessarily mean ARCTIC tundra. ... but the point about maybe having short spring growing season is a good one.

I assume you mean more than "don't eat yellow snow". actually - what DO you mean. by "survivalist elements". It sounds cool.

    Finesse mechanic during criticals

Yeah, I never got sniper because my perception was too low. Hmmm... I know that by end of game I had a 25% crit chance. I thought that was: 10 - from luck 10 5 from finesse trait 5 from more criticals 1 5 from more criticals 2 But either it was 30% or there is no 'more criticals 2'

Well, all we need is an open source TOEE-like engine then.

    Finesse mechanic during criticals

I just finished FO2 with a Finesse / Luck 10. I think Finesee add 5% to crit chance. You can certainly do ridiculous damage with crits, especially when you get the "better criticals" perk. However, through out the mid game, you kind of need to do a critical to actually damage anyone... I just...

You could probably do a hex grid with 12 orientations (face or vertex). I am partial to hexes from ye olde paper wargames.

Great point about chernobyll. Radiation is "bad" but it's the hard core waste products (from enrichment particularly, but also power plants) that have the extreme half-lives. Radiation damage is either a) acute, painful, and ugly (actually FO does this pretty well) for exposure in the...

PARPG - a nuclear winter RPG moving towards a 2nd techdemo

How about forest/jungle. Whatever "cataclysm" occurs - something (bio/chemical) has enhanced plant growth - so cities/suburbs/fields are mostly overgrown forest now. If you ever visit a US Civil War battle field, and compare it to pictures from ca. 1860 - it's quite interesting to see how...

Fallout Online: Impossible to keep the wasteland feeling?

Actually, I thought they did a meh job, although there are obvious reasons why they made the cities small. Or maybe I'm just bitter that "San Francisco" was so nothing like actual San Francisco (although they use a real map for the world map spash screen). People might play Iguana Bob or...

    Bethesda to buy another IP?

GURPS had a good way and simple way of doing this. Weapon damage is based on the mount (i.e. horse) strength not yours. Horse much stronger than human = splatto.
