A critic doesn't like Fallout 3 that much

Not a contrary review but a contrary opinion piece from Crispy Gamer, which not only reveals a personal assessment of parts of the game that stands in stark contrast to those found in many reviews, but also hinting that fellow critics have been under internal pressure to confirm hype and expectations.
Since Fallout 3 shipped in October, I've kept my secret, fearing that should it get out, the rest of the gaming community, including the considerable Fallout fan base, would grab their pitchforks and light their torches and chase me into the old windmill. When it came time to cast my vote for Game of the Year a few weeks back, I spent a series of antacid-infused days wrestling with whether or not I had the stuff to go against the grain, to stand up to pitchfork- and fire-wielders, and be true to my heart. Mostly I wondered if I'd forsake the little credibility I have in this business by picking something other than Fallout 3.

/../

I know of a least a half-dozen writers who included Fallout 3 in their top-10 lists who, I know for a fact, didn't invest more than three or four hours in the game (if that), and still felt compelled to vote for Fallout 3 -- let's go ahead and say it -- because it felt like the right thing to do. In the end, it seems it's not a question of how much critics liked or disliked the game, but rather an issue of not being able to argue with 1. the developers (Bethesda proved with the Elder Scrolls series that they know what they're doing), and 2. the game's pedigree (the first two Fallout games are already well-ensconced in the canon).
Grab your pitchforks, my loyal minions, this guy is going down.

She whispered, "You too? Man, I can't play that shit, either; it just depresses me too much."

At least he's being honest about it. Too little too late, though, right?

Yeah I read about this on RPG Codex.

I think at some point I came to the understanding that this guy's complaint was that Fallout 3 was to much like a RPG.

I wonder where it does.

I don't like this guy.
He didn't have the guts to express his opinion when it was important, and now that the pression is at his weakest, he discovers himself the courage to "go against the mainstream"?
And he even dare to play the martyr?
F...! The only critic he can come up with, is that fallout is a bad Fps and a rpg!
This guy has whoring himself once, and now twice.

Well, my problem with the article wasn't that he didn't like F3 (that's fine!) and voted it GOTY (seems commonplace in the industry). My problem is that the reviewer (paraphrasing here severely, but should get the gist) "i didn't like FO3 as an RPG, and, believe me, I know my RPGs, I played a lot of Dragon Quest 4"

DRAGON QUEST 4 IS THIS PERSONS "BAR" of what a good RPG is??? WTFHOMG!?

So, right there, at least half the article was invalidated, for me.

So, the guy didn't like FO3, but he admires it, and vote it for GOtY?

More like, he hated FO3 but decided that keeping his job as a critic is more important to him =)

Of course, it just shows how reliable the critics and game ratings have become. Although, sucking up has been a good strategy in all ages.

Different people have different preferences. I'm not a DQ fan myself, but a lot of people are for a reason. I would only object to the comparison because I believe that cRPG and jRPG are two different genres of games.

I know what a good RPG is! I played a lot of times in Deus Ex!!

I don't even consider myself "fully knowledgeble" of what a real RPG is about, and I played games which are considered good RPGs.

I'm lighting my torch just as I type this post... Can I thrown a molotov at him, too? While laughing maniacally? After all, there's no problem fire won't solve!

Another CG exec, who's a casual gamer at best, also got seduced by all the Fallout 3 ads and the Web chatter surrounding the game. He bought a copy of the game for his PC. After a painful hour or two, he announced, "I don't get it."
"Well, you have to talk to a lot of people," I explained.
"Real people? Like in an MMO?" he asked.
"No ... fake people."
"How many?"
"A lot. Hundreds, probably."
Now the game sits idle, haunting this guy's hard drive.
...
The critic in me says, "Huzzah! Here's an old-school hardcore RPG! It's huge! It's epic! It comes in an awesome Collector's Edition which includes a lunch box! And it's a big thumb in the eye for casual games!"
A maverick, no less.

I think he is a pretty cool guy. eh blows the BIG whistle and doesn't afraid of anything.

Meh, the article sucked as much as the game.

He clearly isn't an RPG person. (zOMG!!1!1!eleven! ten hours, I should be uber by now!!!!111!1!1!!eleven1!)

This is a deep RPG nowadays though? That's sad. This is supposed to be the benchmark at which "gamers" are trying to beat the "casual gamers" out of the market?

I'll never call myself a gamer again.

from Wiki:

Casual gamer is a loosely defined term used to describe a type of video game player whose time or interest in playing games is limited compared with a hardcore gamer. Casual gamers can conceivably consist of any people who show more than a passing interest in video games, therefore it is difficult to categorize them as a group. For this reason, games which attempt to appeal to the casual player tend to strive for simple rules and ease of game play, the goal being to present a pick-up-and-play experience that people from any age group or skill level could enjoy. A casual gamer usually has less than 5 years of experience.

It takes a lot of hard work to go from casual to hardcore. 5 years on the chain gang.

I blame it on MMOs. People who play MMOs think they play "RPGs". That's where the dumbed-down and run-down-the-mill expectations for cRPGs from "casual gamers" come from - after all they probably think WoW is the best RPG ever made.

Halo and Bioshock hybrid

Somehow that still doesn't sound appealing. I wonder why.

I'm pretty sure there's quite a number of people out there who would cum at hearing this combination.

I played FFXI for a few years, hardly an RPG, definitely an MMO though. I hope you're not calling me retarded simply because I played an MMO... and I definitely expect lots from my cRPG's. I guess there are people out there who are far too impressionable for their own good.

i like how the people in comments criticize the guy for really inane and stupid points saying that the game is teh awezome and if people wanted a REAL rpg they could just play the previous 3...

uhhh... there were only 2 fallout rpgs before 3 ( hence the 3 in the fucking title ) not to mention this game does a hell of a lot worse gameplay wise than the original.

dont know what DQ4 is, but i doubt if its a good RPG as i dont remember hearing about it.

my 2 biggest complaints are:

dialogue is shitty beyond reason

combat sucks ass, tries to be a FPS but fails because it uses online-FPS rather than solo-FPS mechanics in a solo/offline game.
