Any tips to get PipBoy encounter?

You know, the guy from all of the skill/perk pictures. I never found him the first time I played Fallout tactics. This time, I seriously plan to recruit him for the sake of novelty --let alone the fact he has 10 Luck.

A hint I found in GameFAQs (the Recruit Guide suggests that I should find the random encounter before mission 2 (Freeport).
Before FREEPORT

(5BOS) Robin, Jax, Stitch, Farsight, Torn,
Pipboy*

Note: Must recruit him in Pipboy Encounter with party <6>succeed)--> he
became CORE_Pipboy (has 10 luck). Or we can let him wander off the map and
he will be available in Recruit pool as Pipboy (4luck)(Never tried this option.
Anyone want to comment on this?)

I have finished mission 1, and I have explored around the known area. But I still haven't got the PipBoy encounter. And I do not dare to proceed to Freeport, because I worry I will lost the chance to find PipBoy after finishing Freeport mission.

Any clue where to find PipBoy? I have read everything in GameFAQs, but I haven't found any faqs/hints/tips that give specific directions to go to find him. My character has pretty high luck and charisma, and I am adventuring with Farsight, who has pretty good Outdoorsman skill. Yet I just can't find the encounter.

By the way, I'm thinking of something like Neostead Combat SG tips, which specifically tell to roam around Brahmin Woods to find an encounter with citizens who have Neostead (either I wait for RadScorpion to kill them, or I kill them myself to get the Neostead).

Is there a specific location I should go to find Pipboy encounter?

There is only one location which gives you high chance to get this encounter it's placed 25 squares on the left of the Brahmin Wood not including the square with Brahmin Wood location.

In one square you can get maximum 4 special encounters, you have to travel around the edges of a square.

Pipboy character as a recruit is different than Pipboy from the special location.

Here are some differences:
1. Pipboy - recruit (must reach exit grids and must be deactivated)
- S 7 P 5 E 5 C 5 I 6 A 8 L 4
- Level 10
- Age 0
- available only after you will have several missions completed and not to late (if script will be executed before you will find this location then it won't be available as a recruit)

2. Pipboy - from location (you must have less than 6 PC's)
- S 7 P 6 E 6 C 5 I 6 A 6 L 10
- Level 8
- better perks
- can sneak (high skill level)
- age 19
- has FNFAL rifle
- available at once

You must never return to this location because scripts are not preserved, otherwise you won't be able to leave the map.

Yup. According to the hint, the one from the location is better.

You mean, once you entered the encounter map the second time, you won't be able to return to the overland map?
