Boxing and pugilism in general

Mayweather was never an exiting fighter, his dodge hug style wins fights but was never fun to watch and him fighting a amateur was only going to be a shitshow.

Defensive boxing is a skill in itself, a great skill to have. Even outside the ring. Let's say your walking in the street and some crazy starts swinging at you, you actually shouldn't hit back in many cases. If you do hit, even if it's legit, you may cause so much harm that you'll end up as the bigger guilty party in the court of law. So, it's often good to be able to avoid those punches and, yes, have quick feet and haul your ass away from the situation.

I've actually not seen that many of Mayweather's fights, like from start to finish. He's skillful, and more importantly he's American, thus the Americans are interested in him. Since the Klitchko's and now the British are contolling the heavy weigth division, the Americans aren't interested in that at all, unfair to the Klitchko's and also Fury and Joshua.

I'm thinking about trying out boxing. It sounds fun, and since I don't want to get back into Rugby for fear of my knee, I kinda need some violent sport in my life. Gonna check out the local clubs sometime soon.

It's fun. I haven't sparred yet, just hitting the heavy bag a lot. Get pretty good gloves, not necessarily the super-expensive ones but ones that suit you. You're a relatively big guy I think so you can get 14-16 ounce gloves. Don't injure your hands, use gloves that have enough padding, and wrap extra padding on your knuckles if needed. I got a slightly sore knucle after hitting the heavy bag, has healed though.

I have a bag at home and generally use wraps or open-fingered MMA-style gloves. When I check out the clubs I'll get some proper gloves, though.

Yea it makes sense to not hit with 100 % power, or even 90 %, I know that now. And hit with right technique. Some say one should condition one's knuckles with different techniques but I'm not so sure about that.

Yea, even hard sparring can give you that, or at least over a long career of boxing. It's still safe to hit the heavy bag, as long as you don't annihilate your knuckles.

In most sports if you get a knock on the head the thing is over and you'll get help but in boxing it isn't so, it's part of the sport.
