Companions: Thoughts about them?

Just thought I'd start a thread to see what everyone thought about the new companions.

My favorite so far is Cass. She's pretty funny, and I like that her quest ties into other quests. Arcade and Veronica have some good writing too. Raul's my least favorite, because Danny Trejo isn't good at all at voice acting; he's very quiet and bland.

So far I only managed to get ED-E and I can say he's pretty good, I hope to get Cass soon too.

I've travelled around with most.

The non-humans are kind of filler and pretty useless too, but fun as extra tag-ons.

Arcade and Veronica are very oddly cut from the same mold, both gay, both MYSTERIOUS PASTS, though you find out about Veronicas soon. Good writing, solid voice-acting.

Boone is way too powerful in combat, but really well-written as a kind of stand-offish, impatient soldier.

Never picked up Raul. His voice acting turned me away from doing so.

Cassidy didn't seem very interesting. Way too verbose about stuff that isn't too interesting. I kinda liked her take on the NCR/Legion though.

Didn't take Lily along either. Character didn't appeal to me.

Honestly, mechanically companions remain a bad idea. They have to be overpowered in HP/DAM because with a bad AI and no direct control they keep doing stupid shit. Companions in an FP-RPG or any single-character just generally aren't a good idea.

Writing-wise it's nice of Obsidian to make them kind of more Obsidian-like deep NPCs, with loyalty quests and in-world triggers to expand on their past and personality. But it's still a pain to have them along.

I like teaming up with Cass, Boone, and Veronica the most. All of whom are well written, interesting, and voiced well.

I never bothered with Raul, because much like BN, I found his voice acting to be just awful.

Like I've wrote a few times already, I just love Arcade. I love his comments on various stuff and his general attitude.

Even though Boones story is interesting, I find him in general not very interesting. Kind of wakes the feeling of the broken and silent cliché-soldier in me.

The companion I don't really like is Lily. I don't know, it just 100% does *not* fit my interest span.

Cass is nice too, especially because I like her quest. After that... I never took her much time with me.

I tried to perform all companion's quests but Raul didn't work due to a bug I think, and I haven't got a clue if Lily had a quest outside the one at Jacobsville.

I usually stuck to Boone though also had Arcade with me for a long time in order to trigger his quest.

Lily only had that quest. Jacobstown was underused if you ask me.

Heh, that's pretty weak then, imo. And yeah, Jacobstown felt like it should have been bigger. Same problem like with many other areas in New Vegas.. big location, various NPCs running around and only one or max. two quests available.

Jacobsville? I wonder why I wrote that down instead of Jacobstown.

And yeah, some locations needed more quests and not just the couple you mentioned.

Lily's "loyalty quest" is a bit of dialog triggered by randomly (I think). The Jacobstown quest is just her recruitment quest.

It's Lily, not Tabithaa, BN.

Same stupid concept.

Obsidian seems to recycle character cliches a lot.

I like raul, of all the companions he expands the back story the most, Basiclly he gives you alot of information about what happened to mexico during the war and it's aftermath, we also learn that Tucson has become known as "two sun" as the locial english has degraded.

There should be a few mods coming down the pip that make companions behave a lot better. I know there was one for F3 called GTO that made me think I was playing Brothers in Arms with how well companions took cover/lay down a base of fire.

Is there anyone else who didn't roll with a companion? I've never been a huge fan of dragging an NPC along with me.

I've decided to focus on Science, Speech and Lockpicking, plus I'm too lazy to shoot at things. I've had enough shooting with FO3. So I have ED-E and Boone to cover my back. The first one spots them, the second one blows their heads off with a sniper rifle. I just sit back and occasionally shoot a few rounds if something comes too close. I've never thought I can play this game with so little combat. It's awesome.

I see companions as brahmin tbh.. I make ED-E wait at a safehouse for the PER boost and Lily, with it's god damn annoying voice to carry the loot and to give the sneak critical bonus..

All in all, the companions are really annoying. Maybe it's because I have low CHR in most of my games? But they're very under powered :| Veronica getting killed by cazadors while equipped with a ballistic fist and wearing Remnants power armour.. WTF.

Ooooh well that explains it -_-
Boone died while I was playing hardcore at the Fort.. who might you suggest as being helpful-combat wise?

I like using Boone, as he just destroys everything in his sights, and if you give him T51-b, he's pretty much impossible to kill, I did his loyalty quest aswell, but didn't like the armour he got from it, so I kept it myself. I'd put him with Rex, because if you came up with a large legion patrol, Boone would pop them from a distance, whereas Rex would be a like a kamikaze soldier, he'd run straight into the enemy and take out a couple before going KO, yeah, I abused my companions.
