Computer Freezes While Loading Saved Game (in San Fran)

This is the problem I've experienced with Fallout2 on 3 different computers, that all meet the system requirements by far. It seems like when I near the end of the game and almost every single quest is done, including the 15 or so in New Reno that dont even fit on the Pip Boy, the game will freeze in San Fran when I try to load the chinatown map. Now this only has occurred so far when I have been in a sub area of San Fran and tried to come back, like the palace or brotherhood of steel building. This is really a pisser as one cant finish the game if it freezes continually without going to an old saved game. Which defeats the purpose for some items like memory modules for your stats (int,per,str,cha). I'm not even sure if you can complete the game without going to the palace?? Since it keeps freezing I've never finished. Anyways, I have 5 NPCs and bunches of items in the cars, and on my NPCs, and I do have the patch installed before you ask. Thanks for any suggestions anyone might have.

What type of crash is it? Does the computer freeze while loading or the game crashes and you get an error message? I had problems with freezing (see message Crash and burn), also while playing with 5 NPCs and loads of stuff in my inventory. Reloaded an older game and kept my inventory down and the problem went away.
