Error! Could not create primary and back surfaces.

First time out of the vault
...how to fix this problem:
When i try to run fallout tactics this error comes:

C:\dev\phoenix\display\directx7\dd7_display.cpp(715): **fatal error**: Could not create primary and back surfaces

i push OK and then comes a runtime error warning from Microsoft Visual C++ which closes FOT (actually there only comes a black screen, i cant make it all way to the inventory :P )

... i have a p4 2400+ ati radeon9000pro, 1250mbit ram, windows xp, dx9a - if that helps... i think that it has something to do with windows xp or directx (and yes, i tried to change compatibility, didnt help)

Have you downloaded all of the patches for tactics from interplay? You should....

Try the maximum install but it may actually be an incompatability between the direct-x versions. It may be talked about on one of the sites; here, DAC, or Interplay. Sorry I can't help you any more but I never had the problem.

i always install it fully, but ive tried the medium too... but ill keep trying, thanks for the help

Yes, I have the same problem. I ran this game with windows XP. Maybe they dont work together. If there's anything conclusion to this, please tell me.

My Fallout Tactics will not load!! any1 know about this plz?

My Fallout Tactics will not play, it goes through the advertisements trying to make me register with interplay. and then it tells me that the ''Primary and Back surfaces cannot be created'' as well as a runtime error message saying:

'' Runtime Error

Program: C:/Program Files/14 Degrees East/Fallout Tactics/BOS.exe

Abnormal Program Termination ''

If anyone knows how to tackle this problem, please reply, chrz..

Not enough HD space? It didn't install properly? Would be nice to say your system specs, people might actually be able to help you.

Fallout Tactics crashes before first movie

hey,
i have seen related topics on this forum however i am running an older version of windows. 98me. i am getting an error that says that direct x cannot display background textures and then i am getting a run time error. i have installed the program once before on this computer and it worked fine. i am really confused and need help. thanks

Direct X 8
Pentium Four
Windows 98 me

Do you mean 98 second edition, or ME? Either way update your video card drivers, update to the latest direct x etc.

Make sure that you've got no programs running in the background that might not of shut down correctly. FOT sometimes locks up for me at start up when my browser or explorer didn't close down properly or if FT Tools crashes etc.

Or you can try running some of these options in the command line.

-m no music
-s no sound
-3 use direct x 3
-7 use direct x 7
-g use windows gdi

i.e.

c:\program files\14 degrees east\fot\bos.exe -7

i just downloaded and installed direct x 9 and that didnt work. i also tried running it with no sound music and all of the other ones u mensioned. none seemed to work. i am having this computer taken to a friend to get it upgraded and ill see if he can get it to work. there have been some other problems but i dont think that they were related to this game. this was the first time i have installed this game on the newer version of windows. it is windows me. not 98 second edition. anyway let me know if u find anything else.

Windows ME is distinctly different from Win98 and Win98SE. It is the embodiment of Microsoft entirely - a sham of an OS that is quickly shit out to make a couple of bucks, doesn't add anything new or fix more than it breaks, and thereafter dropped in terms of support.

anyway let me know if u find anything else.

Why the hell did you fuck up your computer by putting WinME on it? If it came that way, why haven't you changed that? Even I wouldn't expect to have much of anything run well in WinME. This may sound a bit harsh, but the more recent versions of DirectX are NOT wholly supported on WinME, particularly if you haven't fully patched it. Sounds funny, but it's true.

My best advice is to break out the old Win98SE disk if you still have it, or see if a pawn shop has a copy or perhaps XP if you want to work with that.

Problems with starting Tactics

I recently got Foallout Tactics and installed it on full, and I've also downloaded and installed the latest patch. Whenever I try to start it up, I get a black screen, and an error message comes up saying "Cannot create primary and back surfaces." I've tried running it in compatability mode (I have XP), and I have Directx 9, but nothing seems to change. I've seen a couple of threads for people with similar problems, but none of the suggestions seem to work. Any help would be appreciated.

My comp:
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.16 Ghz, 512 mb RAM
Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 440

As far as I'm aware all known cures have been posted if you can't get any to work then you're out of luck.

So you've tried the usual suspects? Re-install, updated drivers, disabled sound, checked nothing else is running in the background that might be interfering.

hmm.... I guess I haven't tried disabling sound...how exactly would I do that? The error message leads me to believe it is a graphics rather than sound issue, but i could be mistaken.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Do you mean adding -s outside the quotations in the target field under properties for the shortcut? I tried that and nothing different happened; the launcher starting sound was even still there. If what I did wasn't what you mean, coudl you give specific descriptions on how to disable sound?
