Fallout 2 - apathetic Vic?

First time out of the vault
Im not sure why but Vic just says "I've had it up to here!". I didnt shoot him or anything that I know of. Ive read that hes in a "apathetic" state and have no idea how to get him out of it. All I have is the GOG mod. I have yet to use any of the mods but maybe one of those will fix it. Any help would be great thanks.
 
From Per Jorner's Nearly Ultimate Fallout 2 Guide:

"Vic may end up in a state known as "apathetic Vic" where he refuses to communicate other than saying "I've had it up to here". This will happen if you inflict damage on him while he's not in your party, but in rare cases it can happen when you hit him with friendly fire even if he is. In v1.0 this was apparently much more likely, but it can happen even with the patch (the patch notes state NPCs will not turn hostile "under most circumstances"). Once he's gone bitter there's no cure for it, so you'll probably have to put him to sleep to get your stuff (or load). It can also happen that he keeps tagging along as an NPC only you can't talk to him."

I googled it for you. Three seconds is all it took.

While there is no in-game fix for it, there most certainly is a way to cure him.
  • Get Fallout 2 Savegame Editor here.
    Open it and find and select your save.
    Push the "Maps" tab and find the map you are currently on in the "List of *.sav files".
    Select it and push "Edit", and then find and select DCVIC.INT in the "Scripts" list.
    In the "Variables" list, select LVAR_4. Then in the "Value" box in the lower right corner, you need to subtract whatever number is there by 2.
    Finally push "OK" and then "Save".
Load your game and the problem should be solved.

Darek, you are my hero. You just saved Vic's life.

I understand that it's almost 6 years after you posted this answer; I'm amazed that it worked at all, let alone so easily, that the link you posted still works, that the character editor works despite my playing using Wine on a Mac... This was my last resort; I was about to resort to killing Vic in order to try Myron for a bit before getting him killed and then try out Marcus. Now if I need something repaired, I can find Vic alive!

So I went through the process of making a profile, just to say, Thanks, Darek!
 
I hoped for an in-depth discussion about his personality.
Vic can be described as apathetic at times...

oh wow! This started happening to me in my current jinxed build, thanks for bringing this to the top of the forum list for a bit :P

Also, @naossano , Vic is the only early game NPC who will follow you even if you're an evil character with super negative karma...that's pretty apathetic :P
 
One more method to unlock the "Vic". Editing the game save does not work for me. I placed a bomb in "Vic" waited for it to explode and such a small reset "Vic" started talking to me normally.
