Fallout 2 - Can't exit Westin Ranch, NCR

reza77

First time out of the vault
There seems to be a bug in FO2, whereby whenever I ask the guard to let me out of the ranch, he walks to the forcefield console to switch it off and then comes back to his original position but nothing happens. The forcefield is still in place. Seems i'm stuck in the ranch and can't go anywhere. Luckily I saved before going into the ranch but the the problem still recurs if I reload and enter the ranch.

The thing is it wasn't like that for Westin's brahmin quest. I finished that quest, went to New Reno to get the kill westin quest from bishop. Then came back to NCR and then the problem starts. Anyone face this problem?

I'm running ver 1.02

You can try to enter sneak mode and use Science or Repair on the console yourself.

My sneak must not be high enough because I always get caught, or rather Vic gets caught. I tried killing the guard and then using Vic to repair the forcefield emitters. In the message console it said Vic disabled the forcefield but guess what? It's still in place.

I don't suppose there's any trainer or character editor or something that can help me 'teleport' to a different location?

Well, if you don't mind turning people on the ranch hostile, placing some Dynamite right next to the console should work. If that doesn't do it, I don't see what you could do. I know someone reported this bug to killap, but I don't think he could reproduce it at the time.

Well, I know this problem exists if you try to use my patch but install it incorrectly. Did you ever install my patch at some point and then reinstall?

I know I altered how the scripts handle the forcefields at the Ranch which is why when I say the topic of this thread I got suspicious. Confusion then set in when you said you were not using my patch since I don't remember having this problem with regular 1.02.

Edit:

Well, I looked through the scripts and if your science or repair is high enough you can use the terminal by the gate to open it. If you fail, you get a warning. If you fail again he will attack. Even if you succeed you will get a warning and touching the terminal again will cause the guard to attack.

The terminal script is broken, however, and you will need to grab this updated one from here. Just copy this file over to your BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\Scripts folder.

In addition, I want you to test something before using the new script. You say you have a save before going into the ranch. Is this save on the map that you enter right after the NCR entrance (ie the map with the police station, gun store, etc) If so, leave that map (either the entrace area or the council area) and then reenter the map you were at. Now try and enter Weston's ranch and leaving. It should work...I think. Let me know.

Thanks, i'll try that and yes, I did install your patch at one point, but then I realized it wouldn't work with my previous 1.02 saved games. So I uninstalled the entire game and repatched with 1.02. I thought reinstalling the game would override any changes your patch did. Maybe i didn't do a thorough reinstall.

Well if you didn't delete the Fallout 2 folder (and the folders inside (maps, scripts, etc)) then some of my patch files will still try to be used.

As for you issue I believe the problem is saving, reloading, and then trying to access the forcefield. Did you save on the Weston map and then reload before using the forcefield? If so, then that is the problem. It would be fixed in my patch, but since you aren't using it the problem is there.

Edit, I just realized that the file that was supposed to be attached to my post above is not there anymore. Well, here is is again. download fix here

I'm now having the same problem, but from the outside - can't get in. I was playing v1.0, upgraded to 1.02, and used the saved game converter. I could get into the ranch with 1.0, but can't with 1.02. I didn't try sneaking and repairing, though - I'll give that a shot.

I have the same problem.
I can't get in the ranch the guard keeps walking to the control panel but nothing happens...

I tried everything but nothing works. I got every patch available installed....

I even tried to explode the control panel from behind the wall.

Please help because I would like to continue on my queste :)

And did you also try the things mentioned in this thread? Like, you know, cleaning up the Fallout installation so that kilap's patch won't mess it up?

i reinstalled killaps patch.
I installed every patch this forum offers..

Do you think i have to remove fallout 2?
Install it again, install patch 1.2, install killaps patch, copy new scrip

?

Do you think that maybe reading the forum descriptions noting that you should not post here if you have any unofficial patches installed? Or that maybe you should read the advice given in this very thread, like Killap's advice to install a file he provides.

Well i installed that file... I read the thread 4 times and made sure i did everything that was mentioned.

Could the problem lay in the fact i am using the no-cd crack....

I got the original CD of Fallout 2 but the game still asks for the cd.
I cant play the game without the no-cd patch.

Try completely deleting your Fallout 2 directory (copy your savegames somewhere else), then *selectively* install the patches you want (or need). Just applying every single patch you can find is a surefire way to fuck things up, and that's probably what got you.

Ok thanks, at first i was just playing with patch v1.02 but because of alot of bugs i kept re-installing patches to fix them.

It probably fucked up some files.
Re-installing fallout as we speak.

deleted everything (saved saves), installed fallout 2, installed patch 1.02, installed no-cd crack.

Did that and the bugs gone.
Thanks again. I guess i won't install those other patches anymore

Funny. i cant enter.

Im stuck as heck :( cant get through. ive talked to Most of the people in ncr too. I Need to whack him for Bishop heheh.

Why don't people just read the damn thread they're posting in, or the stickies? This is just getting stupid.

I'm using no unofficial patches {unless the converter counts} and no cracks, so the suggestion meant to keep patches from interfering wouldn't be relevant for me, yet i have the same problem as above:

When i ask to enter the Westin ranch, the guard walks over to the monitors, fiddles with them and comes back, but the forcefield remains.

So...why didn't you try any of the other suggestions in this thread?
