Fallout/post-apoc tidbits round-up

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
Just a couple of tidbits: Two fairly impressive weapon replicas from fans have come to our attention: Bethesda forums user unorthodoxdesign made a pretty good-looking Fallout 3/New Vegas Plasma Rifle, while Falloutnow's Urlag does justice to another Fallout 3 design, the AER9 laser rifle.

Also, Mutant: År Noll, which apparently translates to "Mutant: Year Zero", has received a teaser trailer. It's apparently going to be the sequel to Mutant, "Sweden's most beloved RPG" and is slated for a Spring 2014 release date. Just to clarify, it's a pen and paper RPG and not a videogame. (Thanks, DeadGuy.)

Got to love the trailer for Mutant. Looking forward to picking it up when it comes out. :D

I can understand that the Year Zero tidbit isn't too interesting for the majority of NMA readers, while the trailer is still nice if perhaps a bit run of the mill in some ways.

But our Swedish users should be excited about this, those too young to have played Mutant back in the golden ages of Swedish PnP should be as well, though I'm not sure how popular pen and paper is with the late 80s through 90s generation. The Swedish take on D&D is also getting a new release, and the company holding the rights to the 80s-90s material from that game have released all of it for free as scans on their website. Shit is looking good for PnP players over here right now.

I imagine a lot of Swedish fans of Fallout were introduced to this type of setting by Mutant. They're really quite similar in a lot of ways, except maybe how Mutant handled mutation, which in my opinion was excellent.

How about you, Per?

I want to play pen and paper but I don't have any real life friends that would play with me. Who wants to develop an online PnP GUI and make a million dollars?

Also: Someone needs to make a RL Fallout 1 SMG. Energy weapons don't really do it for me.

I don't think a plain adaption of PnP would work that well tbh, but there is certainly a space/crowd that has not been covered/satisfied by today's digital RPGs. You want to play as a group with all the freedom that comes from using your imagination, yet play it in front of a screen. The one who nails that recipe will get my money.

A new Mutant? Really?!?
Hmm.. I'm pretty certain I could round up a decent crowd for some old fashioned p'n'p rpg once it has been rolled out.

Only problem is that I probably wouldn't have the time needed for a (or several) full campaign(s). :(
Life is a different now than 30 years ago...

Indeed we played some Mutant (and much more DoD). Apparently the first edition was largely a mashup of Basic Role-playing and Gamma World with local flavour. (I find the whole line of evolution from Gamma World over Mutant and Kult to 40K-ripoffs Mutant Chronicles and Doomtrooper to be pretty fascinating.) I had some hopes for the revival of classic Mutant, even going so far as to try to pitch the idea of Forgotten Realms-style franchise novels to the publisher, but I got the impression they never gathered much steam. I did hear of the release of the DoD material recently; unfortunately the stuff I would most like to check out is that which they didn't release, the Svavelvinter follow-ups. :(
