Saving Dogmeat

Is there anyway to get Dogmeat through the Cathedral alive? Some careful shooting and an insane amount of luck helped me get him through the military base, but now I seem to be stuck.

Well, if you have a high sneak skill you can go through the whole cathedral without even needing to fire a shot. But if you get into a fight Dogmeat's odds are not good.
