fixing the car

Has anybody been able to fix the car without help from Smitty? for instance if he was, lets say, dead?

now why did you go and kill poor old smitty?, there is no way to get the car unless smitty fixs er' up for ya so best bet? restart your game, i hope you saved before that :-)
