Focusing on Energy Weapons

Golan2072

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I'm close to the end of Fallout III GotY (only Broken Steel remaining), and this time I've played heavily with Small Guns, switching to Energy Weapons only near the end (during Mothership Zeta, which I finished shortly before the MQ).

So, for the sake of variety, I'm considering playing New Vegas (the next game I'm going to purchase from STEAM) with Energy Weapons tagged in the beginning. Would the game be playable then - that is, would I have enough ammo and energy weapons available during the early game so that I could focus on energy weapons for the whole game?

Also, how playable is FO3 with Energy Weapons as the main combat skill in the early game?

Both are well playable with only energy weapons, I think it's how I played both first run.

You can get low-grade energy weapons pretty early on (usually a laser pistol, in New Vegas you get one very early if you tag the skill) and manage. It's a bit harder to start than with guns, but it's manageable. Ammo recycling helps, so science is an above-average support skill, but you can get low-grade bulk ammo pretty cheap right off the bat.

So yeah, don't worry about it, it's playable.

I agree with BN. The main difficulty will be with finding ammo early on. If you run out, or to avoid running out, you can try to avoid combat as much as possible, and/or fall back on available guns until your Energy Weapons needs are met.
