Gaming Source talks to Pete.

Gamingsource have also contacted Pete Hines (PR Bethesda) concerning the aquisition of the Fallout Franchise, and here's a snibblet:
Gamingsource: The Fallout series has a large fan following. Was this one of the main reasons for Bethesda confronting Interplay for the rights to the game or were there other reasons (such as a personal love for the series) which sparked the decision to ask for the rights?

Pete Hines: I think it was more about our internal discussions about what kind of game we thought we could do, and do really well. There are any number of available RPG licenses out there, as well as the opportunity to implement any number of our own original ideas, but at the end of the day we really wanted the chance to make Fallout 3, so that's what we're going to do.
Get the rest, here.
Thanks to DarkOne for spotting this.

Also, Game Source has a new domain:
Gaming Source has purchased fallout-3.com and will soon begin developing Fallout Source, a new fansite for the new game, Fallout 3. If you are interested in getting in on the action and helping to work on this new fansite then please drop Rob a line.
Burp..

I believe someone mentioned this earlier (calling gamesource "cybersquatters":)).

Nothing new, really. However, I does seem like they more or less randomly chose buying Fallout instead of some other RPG-license (as he more or less directly tells us that "personal love for the series" was not a motivation whatsoever).

GAMINGSOURCE: The Fallout series has always had a myriad of different and entertaining easter eggs and characters. Does Bethesda hope to carry on this trend or will the game be a little more serious?

PETE HINES: It's too early to get into specifics, but in general we hope to create a game that is true to what the original Fallout was about and what made it so much fun.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAMINGSOURCE: Fallout fans seem to be skeptical about whether Bethesda will be making a Fallout 3 that is true to the original series. Do you think Fallout 3 will satisfy the fanatics within the Fallout community?

PETE HINES: I sure hope so. We won't be able to know for sure until the game comes out
and people play it and decide whether they like it or not.

Doesn't sound too bad. Though I wonder WHAT EXACTLY they mean by "staying true to what made Fallout fun in GENERAL".

It seems good that they atleast WANT to please hardcore fans. But it almost sounds like that they rather make the game THEIR way without listening to what the fans says and then in the end, the fans can either like it, hate it or whatever.

I say we give them some time to get a feel for the previous games, develop some ideas, read the various fan threads, and then come up with a solid plan.

Rome wasn't built in a day....

But as you see pro Bethesda "Fansites" and chats are beeing made, wich leads me to believe they aren`t and were never interested in our feedback, no matter how loud or quiet and with a lot of thought it is made. Well maybe not, we`ll see.

HAH!

Bethesda is bullshit.

put up, or shutup I say.

I wont believe them til the devs start talking about what theyre implementing, and show us some screencaps.

They would be fansites. Just fansites of the Fallout 3 created by Bethesda rather than the original Fallout series.

We still don`t know if it will be a Fallout game or Morrowind with guns, so calling them Fallout3 fansites is premature.

As far as I'm aware, Bethesda have answered all the questions that NMA have sent them. Are you forgetting this?

Really? In what alternate reality that happened? They did say they won`t be doing an isometric game but it wasn`t when NMA asked. They did say they would do the type of game they do best (big?no dialogue trees? first person? who knows) but not to NMA.

What NMA got was:
We certainly have ideas, but nothing concrete. The only reason we made this announcement was to announce the deal. We had no intentions to talk about specifics because we're not ready to do that yet, and to do so now would be fruitless. We have a lot of work to do and things to accomplish before we start talking to Fallout fans and the gaming public about the game itself.

We have some ideas. We have folks here that have been thinking about and talking about it, some longer than others. But, we're not announcing something we've been working on for two years. We're simply announcing a licensing deal that was recently signed.

It will be a while before we start talking about the game. It should give folks plenty of time to calm down a little and stop killing us and what it is they think we're doing before we've even gotten started.
wich is less than even SA got... so again what alternate reality is that?

I hope they will be more open in the future, preferably on the record. Ask how NMA has been a bridge between diferent groups of Fallout fans and between them and game developers, it will be a shame if Bethesda throws that habit into the ground. We`ll see.

Let's just hope this was all a big PR accident and we can all get over the initial reactions from all the sides, and hope this turns out for the best.

You never know, perhaps someone could make the argument that the Fallout community is based upon bitterness and anger. Without the constant set-backs and mistreatment, the community could break up or change as to be unrecognizable. Or not.

We'll see in time, though hopefully we've made an early impression on Bethesda; about what direction their Fallout should take (if they haven't concretely made up their minds previously).

Actually things aren't as harsh/bad as people think, I've talked to several Bethesda employees yesterday and they don't have a problem with us.

Well let's hope that's true, maybe you (or kharn or pope, you get the idea) could write a real nice, flowery mail to them, and invite them to join the discussions here, maybe add some sugary "no flaming or retardery" promisses? tough that would need some kind of special preparation, we have already made some people bitter during this week, and i think some of them might have enough time on their hands to actually try to sabotage our efforts. Well, that could be me just being paranoid, but i gotta go, the CIA is tracing this post. :)

Better yet, make a new fourm for that chat, and only give NMAers who want to get involved (and are told under threat of Rosh to behave) the ability to post in said fourm.

Then allow members to post a thread asking a question, and have a civil debade/discussion of said question.

Like Pete has hinted, they are going to wait for the time when they have something concrete to discuss. Right now they don't, but I do know that they are "listening".. :look:

IMO, they do have a plan but that plan might be subject to change...

Same here. Whoa, I talk to Bethesda people? Hey, do I KNOW Bethesda people? Funny, I do. I know them in other capacities just as I knew much of BIS in other capacities. The one person I haven't talked to yet that I really want to is the PR guy, though from the other attempts I've heard are either given the usual or nothing.

Seriously, those who want to get into the fray can observe some common sense.

If the hard critics are proven wrong, as I always hope (why wouldn't I hope I was wrong; it would be rather absurd, right?), then we'll probably give full support and thank them for proving us wrong. After all, what can we say? "Fuck you for making a sequel that feels like a sequel in all regards and has some better uses for skills that were otherwise almost useless! It looks great but keeps the pulpish style, too! FUCK YOU!" Uh...how does THAT line of logic work?

If we are proven right, then what? Blame the fans, as usual? It's funny when before the game is released "you have no control over how the game does" moves to "you killed it with your negativity" or "don't think you had anything to do with it" when the unfavorable word of mouth killed off the sales of previous titles that were highly in question.

The risk Bethesda takes is dependent upon their decisions.
The role we play is also dependent upon their decisions. We could either say it looks good and pass on favorable word of mouth because the game is everything everyone remembers from Fallout, but it looks better, suits the style, and is a decent sequel - or we could point out it isn't resembling parts of the Fallout CRPG presentation and cover the aspects that do not fit, as we have done fairly and factually for each and every Fallout game that has come out. There's flaws in each, some much more than others, one is brilliant, the sequel was a bit chancy but still good.

There's no malice behind our roles, honestly. Maybe a lot of perplexation and curiosity that someone could be both aware of the Fallout franchise and fan presence, yet not expect this to come about unless this is just a PR stunt. It's amusing when people take posts with "violence" in them and try to take them literally. It's quite amusing, indicating either internet newbiedom or attention whoring.

The thing most people need to understand that this is still quite early and that anyone who DOES write this off already hasn't really given this a fair chance. It's one thing to say crap and another to point at something you don't like and say "I don't like that, and since it doesn't seem to have any regards towards the series, I believe that those who are following the series would be having flashbacks from times when the developers would ignore common sense for series design when there's plenty of examples of failure being the result."

Hey, I really don't want Bethesda to be known as the people who killed off Fallout, as they do one series well in their preferred design, even if I have creative differences with the rest of their work outside of that series.

I do hope they realize that a good majority of TES players got used to and loved playing the implementation of afflictions in Daggerfall. That is something most other games haven't really explored in a "could happen at any time given the danger" way, and I wish more had. It was what made the game fairly distinct in those terms, and I would hate for TES to lose what makes up its appeal just as much as it would be a shame for Fallout to lose the same.

I think it would be quite unfair to claim that the developers can't see that a game's following has a life of its own, as they would have undoubtedly have seen for TES; on the same note it would be unfair to keep pushing out press coverage if all they're going to do is send their potential future customers and those who are taking their time to offer what is essentially free press, into a frenzy without really giving those following anything to give them reason to believe Bethesda and in fact Bethesda's done exactly the opposite so far. It does feel patronizing, given what they have said. It's insulting in that it implies that we don't care about the design or why we bought the series, as long as there's a box with "Fallout 3" on it.

I do have to say that the first step to correct this mess is to establish much clearer lines of communication, which many of us are already working on. I ask that people please be patient while this is going on, and be assured that we've heard many reasons for feature X and Y and while they are valid, I don't think that they should be posted again. I'll need some help with this, so in turn I will have to ask that people do try their best to be educated about the situation and the reasons before they decide to drop any flamebait.

One suggestion for Todd: Pete's hands and mouth; fiberglass tape them inoperative. ;)

Oh, I almost forgot:

No. BAD TOUCH!! BAD TOUCH!!

No, just have a baby deathclaw 'condition' him to only speak in SMART ways.

If he keeps up like hes going now, he might as well get a job for Herve.

Pete's not a bad guy, he just seems way in over his head and he hasn't realised that yet. It's probably been a hectic week for the guy and he hasn't had time to let what's gone on over the last five days sink in.

Wow, great response rosh, better than i expected, thanks.
