Well, any tips about germany? I'll be living here for like 5 months to study.

So if any of you live in germany or have ever been there, what do you think of the place? The west part, of course.

Is there still a big difference between east and west? Do foreigners have any trouble fitting in?

Why of course? :question:

If you want tips for your stay here you should specify the town you will be living in.

Since Germany is a federal republic regional differences are quite big.

For instance your stay here will vastly vary whether you stay in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig or Dresden.

It all depends on your preferences... If you are a NY Person you most likely won't have much fun in Columbus Ohio or Austin Texas.

There shouldn't be any notable problems fitting in...
 
I feel insulted, since I live in the eastern part of germany. :D Why do people still think this is "no mans land", still deep in socialism etc? There aren't that much differences between east and west anymore, maybe on the countryside, but thats also just a cliche..

And you have to be a bit more specific, what exactly do you do here, where do you live then etc..
Do you want to party alot, or want to be more in a quiet ambiente and so on.. And usually it's very friendly to foreigners, especially in the big cities. (Sometimes I think, there are more english speaking people than german people over here in Leipzig. :D )
 
Well Dragula you have those in nearly every bigger city...

Most of those buldings have been torn down by now since people move to the suburbs, the west or inner city areas.

Letz forget that for a moment and just say you made a joke ;)

Berlin can be a great location to visit. I know a friend whos in a university there and he pretty much likes it. Visit the Reichstag, and some other places. If youre interested in history and WW2 Berlin has a lot to offer since it was well a important part of it.

On the other side many enjoy Heidelberg which is pretty close to my location so I can recomend that.

Schwarzwald, Odenwald etc. this are nice places as well. If you spend 5 months here take your time to visit eventualy the Octoberfest which also starts in September. Munich and Bavaria in general are a great place (but watch out Munich isnt that cheap!).

Then there are a lot of events for Rocknuts, Technofreaks and such. Wacken, Loveparade and the Ruhr area are known festivals and places.

Yes just as there is in many other nations. Obviously no location or part is just simply like the other one. But I doubt that one will get trouble there.
 
I live in east germany too. Like it here more than in the arrogant west. :P

In the last five years, I was moving from east to west to east to west... In both directions have been shitty cities. Now I live a bit south of Berlin and it's okay.
 
how awesome! Some time ago I was planning to study in Germany too, but I thought it was a better idea getting a Brazilian College degree first, and then go to study in Germany :) I have family in Berlin, someday I hope I'll be there hahaha. Unfortunately, everything I know about Germany comes from my father's family or from books and internet, so I can't really give any advice you don't know already, but good luck though!
 
If you would be Argentinian I would have said that you dont need to go to Germany to see some Germans :P
 
Yeah, Argentina has a pretty big number of Germans, although there are a lot of them in the south of Brazil as well. Actually Brazil has more people of German ancestry (~5,000,000) than Argentina (~3,000,000), the difference is that Brazil population (190,000,000) is higher than Argentina's (40,000,000), so the percentage of Germans in the middle of Argentinians are higher than Brazil's percentage.
 
I was joking about the west part. I come from Romania, and i can still see the scars of communism here, that's all.

People (germans) told me that there are a lot more skinheads in the east, that's all. Otherwise they said it's the same.

I'm staying in Wuppertal right now, i study physics. I'll be here for 5 months and i hope to be back to study astrophysics after i graduate.

So far i've been to Koln and Bonn. I'll be going to a gym to do some boxing in Bonn, so i'll go there every week.

There are a lot more cities near me, important ones i mean, i'd wish to visit them all... if i have the time.

For me Wuppertal looks cleaner and nicer than Bucharest, safer too, so you understand where i'm coming from.

People have been very friendly so far, also considering that my German is still awfull.

Yes i am, i'm also interested in the history of communism/the wall so i'll visit that museum too. I just have to go and get there.

All in all i like it here, tomorrow i start my classes. I'm excited/scared as i don't really speak a good german. But hey, mathematics and physics are universal...

Don`t belive everything　Germans try to tell to you. This ist a connon rumor and for some little parts of east Germany it may be true, but it isn`t reallz as bad. There is some seperation between east and westgerman people. Many people who never where in the east part will tell you horror storys, but about 90 Percent aren`t true. Normally the bigger citys looks really well. Leipzig, Erfurt, Dresden and Magdeburg are really great places to visit. And you can go around without seeing skins vor months. Other citys like Halle looks more like 20 years ago. Beside if you ask north Germans about Bavaria it will be the same, you will hear many horror storys.

You should at least visit Berlin and for example Dresden. I know many forreigners which went there and really liked it.
But the most important fact is, have fun in these 5 months.
 
everyone knows the Bavarians are the "true" Germans. They are so much Germans that they pee Sauerkraut ;)
