Hot Coldman
First time out of the vault

4 is a caricature with AAA mechanics. So that means you have vaults, vault boys, jet, the brotherhood, ghouls, etc. All there to disguise the polished and basic modern mechanics.
Bethesda, at least to me, has shown partially in FO3 that they can infact channel Fallout to be a good series on modern 3D graphics. FO3 was 'half and half' - a pretty good 3D Fallout game considering they are not the original IP holders, developers.
They even showed the BOS in a traditional light with the Outcasts as opposed to being the knights out to save the Commonwealth from the Institute so the ... degenerates.. can live happy.
One of the reasons 3 had the FO charm was that they respected the SPECIAL system as much as Bethesda can with the jump from 2D isometric 'snoozefest' to mainstream 3D. Obsidian did it better, but they also make better RPGs than bethesda's open world games. In FO4 we have the 7 SPECIAL attributes all differently named and they will slightly cjamge your carry weight, AP, leveling and speech checks. Did I get all of what 'SPECIAL' does in FO4 there? Not even a system anymore. Also, there's perks. Which is.. nice. Call of Duty made that a cool little thing, righ? So it was cool to keep that in.
3 was still accessable to a big crowd that Bethesda understandably wants a piece of - they are big enough to attempt it. And it still held a resemblance of roleplaying in the dialogue, even though Obsidian did it better. That's why I still turn on 1, 2 and New Vegas for a modded playthru every once in a while. 1, 2 and NV are the main entries, not only because some of the OG team worked on those three, but because they are good Fallout games. The roleplaying is also potentially superior. Not to mention NV was truly a spiritual succesor to 2. They used SPECIAL in dialogue like 3 did, and not only that, they also added on to the series in its new 3D form. Not seen in FO4 unless you try a charisma speech check for 50 extra caps. Now that most detailed typical FO mechanics have been removed and replaced with the basic things, we are left with AAA: the Fallout Game.
So there it is. I'm having fun with this because it's a fun game, not because it's a good Fallout. It's a good open world aaa game with shooting, loot, building and speech checks.
Rant off!
