I am already beginning to dislike Fallout 2

First time out of the vault
I played through Fallout 1 and although it has some obvious flaws I think it is a game worth playing again. I am currently playing Fallout 2 and I can't stand how your character makes random encounters on the world map EVERY FREAKING SQUARE kilometer/mile/whatever-those-squares-represent. And its usually an encounter with like half-a-dozen highwaymen, slavers, or bandits that a lower leveller can't handle.

Seriously, the frequency with which I make random encounters on the world map reminds me of the horrible Playstation 1 game called Beyond the Beyond. It's such a nuisance.

I don't care if the outside world is a more dangerous place or whatever excuse there may be, its annoying and downright stupid to have to constantly run away from battles your character obviously can't win just to make some progress in the early part of story (visiting the Den, Vault City, etc)

if your using the killap's unofficial patch, you should try and read the readme, it has a solution to this problem.
If your not using the patch i cant help. Never had this problem while using "vanilla" Fallout 2.
Q: I am getting way too many/too few encounters on the world map. Why is this?
A: Encounter rates, like world map travel speed, were hardware dependant and thus the faster the computer you have, the less random encounters you will experience. This has been addressed in this patch and a reasonable rate has been chosen as the default value. If you don't like the number of encounters you are experiencing, go to your Fallout 2 directory and look for a file called ddraw.ini. Search for something called "WorldMapEncounterRate=" If you did not alter this already, it should say "WorldMapEncounterRate=30" Changing it to a higher value will make you have less encounters and changing it to a lower value will make you have more encounters.allout 2.
Edit: been testing with the value, and i found 75 to be usable, though i wouldnt recommend using it for evil characters/childkillers. This might wary depending on your pc. so testing it yourself is best.

Ok then. How can I make the encounter rate as close to Fallout 1s as possible?

Or let me ask it in a different way, how often do you other Fallout players make random encounters on Fallout 2 map? I make an encounter every 1-2 squares I move. sometimes more. That's a bit excessive and disruptive to the game, I think.

Since you didn't answer Patton89's question of whether or not you are using Killap's patch it is hard to answer your new question. Using vanilla 1.02d fallout 2, I very rarely had an encounter and just flew across this map. This is with a 1.8ghz Athlon XP. Maybe Den -> VC would be 2 encounters. Certainly not one every square.

If you are using Killap's patch (which I and most here would recommend if you want a 'pure' fallout 2 experience), Patton89 told you what to do to reduce the encounter frequency.

well I am already using killaps patch. And I know how to reduce it. But I want to know if everyone else is getting encouters as frequent as I am without fiddling with the settings.

Outdoorsman and luck play a part in that as well, I think, though I'm talking out my ass.

Anyway, terrain type seems to affect it for me. i.e., mountains around the New Reno/Redding area yield hella encounters, maybe one every two or three squares. Flat terrain could yield one every five or six, in my memory. Haven't played it for a few months though.

Anyway, do what those guys said.

Yes, people will have higher encounter rates on newer computers. Just fiddle with the settings until you reach a point you're comfortable with. Try the 75 rate mentioned by Patton.

Well i had insane encounter rate after i installed KP, i got encounter every 0,5 map squares. And those were " highwaymen" and "raiders" etc. Bit too much when i am barely
done in DEN and heading to redding/VC

Hmm. When FO2 first came out I remember having an encounter every half square of travel. Took me forever to get from the Den to VC. But then, I was playing on one of our older machines. When I reinstalled it on a new machine the encounteres were more reasonable.

Now, however, map travel is super fast and virtually encounter free. I had to install that encounter patch to make encounters more common.

I have no idea what people are talking about when they say you have more encounters on faster machines. It seems the opposite for me.
