I replayed first Fallout, only to realize once again...

Hmmm...

I dislike the towns in Fallout 2, but the amount of times you ran into things in Fallout 1 out in the desert was pitiful. I think I managed to walk from one side of the map to the other without encountering a single thing.

The thing I do in Fallout 2 currently is make a mod on the random encounter table where I have roughly 15 Navarro guys armed with vindicator miniguns, YK42B Pulse Rifles, gauss rifles, plasma grenades and HK G11e's, fight a bunch of about 12 bounty hunters armed with holy hand grenades, turbo plasma rifles, vindicator miniguns and gauss rifles. It is most fun to watch, and I discovered something funny about the HHGs, they light up the area of impact by about 3 hexes in all directions.

But nonetheless, it is very painful when you get hit.

Hmmm... I personally found the number of random encounters in Fallout 2 to be extremely over-done. I like the barren wastelandish feel of Fallout 1.

RE: Hmmm...

Perhaps I overreacted. Folks at BlackIsle did a fine job: they added a car into the game, made a superb-looking new armor, boosted up the engine, and some additions to Fallout 'universe' were very cool (like tribals and talking Deathclaws).

HOWEVER they turned Fallout from elite classic into 'pop poop' - random encounters are really a bit too often, and sometimes too crazy (crashed whale? Startreck shuttle? Mad cows? Knights? 'Tin Man'?), weapons look too shiny and polished, and most of all, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore - that is, I don't feel like this is a world after nuclear war. More like one of these multiple fantasy RPGs that flooded the market.

San Francisco with Chinese population 99/1? Mobsters in fedoras with Tommy guns? Gold mining (this one is especially dumb - how much could gold do if your goal is to survive in wastelands?) ? Other towns are making sense, but again, they don't help Fallout 2 to look like its predecessor. NCR is very much like modern cities, but I'd better like it if it was a big village. New Reno would be better off if it was a battlefield of raider clans in ruined city. San Francisco should be more like Adytum, but a few tribes fishing on the shores are permitted. Broken Hills should be more like Gecko - supermutants frawned by outsiders. Vault City needs more spice in it, and slavery is not enough. I want to see despicable atrocities happening in the night!

To be continued, mwa-ha-ha... :-)

I think we've inadvertantly discovered...

What's missing in Fallout 2:

Run down gang run cities!

The buildings in Fallout 1 are barely standing, they are all patched up with wrecked cards, planks of wood, and oil drums.

Here's my criticism of each city in F2:

Arroyo: A tribe is a bit funny, they would have at least retained some weapon expertise from the Vault Dwellers time

Klamath: It has the right looks, but a crap theme. Plus its too damn hard to get around. It's more like the back roads of London than a struggling city.

Modoc: The farming struggle was a nice touch, but what the hell is this ghost farm? What's the point?

Gecko: The ghouls shouldn't be friendly, and you would have thought that all power plants were bombed, wouldn't you? It should be less open, more like a bunker, keeping smoothies out.

Vault City: It has too much technology. The huge laser turrets outside are bullshit. Where would they get those from? Plus it was soooo boring. There's nothing to do there.

Redding: What's the point in Gold?

New Reno: Jet? Crime Families? What is all this doing in fallout?

Broken Hills: The idea of Humans, Ghouls and Mutants united is absurd.

Navarro: This part is okay. They have a good access to technology because they're the US govt. Makes sense.

NCR: This whole place is, like Arthur said, a modern town. It doesn't belong in the game.

San Francisco: Why are there all the Asians? Yeah the sub crashed, but what happened to all the other people living there? Of course it got bombed, but did they have to do such a good job rebuilding it?

Also, the Brotherhood of Steel: Where did they go to? Why did they disappear?

If I could make a TC changing all these things, I would. But it would take an incredibly long time.

Well, I could start modding just Gecko then.

And in the other post, I meant wrecked cars, not cards.
