From Gamasutra:
Publisher Interplay has announced its third quarter earnings, showing sales falling 86 percent year over year to just $47,000, a period CEO Herve Caen calls "an important milestone" in its "difficult turnaround," as it reopens in-house development and prepares to launch development of its Fallout MMO.

The company's quarterly sales are down sharply from the second quarter, where its sale of the Fallout brand to MMO developer Bethesda saw it take in $5.9 million, a yearly rise of 872 percent.

Though the company is in somewhat of a holding pattern with few products actually on the market, chairman and CEO Caen said Interplay is "now focused on a two-pronged growth strategy."

"As we are working to secure funding for the development of a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based on the popular Fallout franchise," he continued, "we are at the same time exploring ways to leverage our impressive portfolio of gaming properties through sequels and various development and publishing arrangements." Caen offered no further details on just what arrangements were being considered.

In a release, Interplay announced, though, that with the reopening of its in-house studio, it has hired former Fallout designer Jason Anderson, who previously left development of Fallout 2 to form Troika Games, as creative director not of its Fallout MMO, but of another yet unannounced MMO.
Link: Interplay 10-Q filing (SEC).

Well, that explains some things.

Not sure what "a release" Gamasutra is referring to. Digging it up.

Fallout based MMO? Kinda defeats the object of a PA sparsely populated wasteland but I would love to play.

seems like a bad time to go after this - the MMO market is kind of tired and i fear their lack of money will make them follow the classic mmo formula and fail. still .. i am curious what they will be able to scrap :)

other than that:

When I read stories with Herve surviving... I think about causing myself bodily harm... Lousy fraud...

As much as this guy messed up very bad. This literally made me laugh with joy. Like I'm so fucking happy. Not for the MMO. But the other games they might work on. I love all the developers from Interplay and Black Isle. OMG i FEEL LIKE SUCH A LITTLE SCHOOL GIRL RIGHT NOW. Am I the only one??? I'm so fucking excited!!!! Maybe Herve Caen will change his way of thinking.

Games coming out

I'm actually impressed with Herve. Interplay was almost 100 million in debt at one point and is now only about a million in debt. If he can resurrect Interplay and make some of those great classic games, I will be quite impressed. Also, you have to give him props for bringing in Jason Alexander to head up development of Fallout MMORPG. It shows that Herve has been paying attention to what the fans want, a true vision of Fallout, not Bethesda's bastardized version.

P. S. Interplay stock is still in the 8 cent range. I'm fixing to throw in a little cash, just to see how all this play out. Probably a long shot, but with no risk comes no reward.

C'mon, frymuch, I know you're usually better informed than that. It's Jason Anderson and he's not working on the Fallout MMO (according to Gamasutra. Mixed messages on that topic).

I think Herve liked having him for a big-name. Draws investments.

And haven't you been impressed with Herve for like 4 years now?

I still think ever since I heard the words Fallout MMO I've thought ok so everyone's going to be a BOS soldier in power armor with a laser gatling woo hoo. This meaning exactly NOT the point of whole series. I just don't see a way of making this work without corrupting the series we all find dear. I would love to be mistaken, but I just don't see it. $.02

---On a more positive note, I was at my local EB Games and saw a release date for FO3, well maybe not such a positive note but I still saw it and iirc it was 09/09/08

***Edit ..and wow I still have 2 strikes for the same post I made like 6 months ago note to all you lurkers don't use logic in your posts lol

If there's going to be a Fallout MMO, it really should have a "rape" option :) .

Actually, IMO it should be an MMO, where are no much monsters but towns populated with non-combat characters where PCs would be guards/raiders/politicians, etc.
And experience is gained by raping women and finding food :) .

It would be EXTREME :) .

Ever played Guild wars?

That managed to feel very sparsely populated (though it was unintentional), but it does show that instanced game design can allow for a wasteland atmosphere.

A well designed Fallout MMO could work, and could overcome or solve all the issues that have been mentioned here.

Though im more likely to win the lottery than to ever see such a game.

Jason D. Anderson working on it is a big plus
Indeed. Him being under Herve is a big minus. But the simple fact that Anderson is working on it makes me like it better than Fallout 3...

Maybe somebody from ex-Troika wanna join Interplay, expect Anderson? Not Cain, but Boyarsky or somebody else?
Boyarsky is at Blizzard and he's not stupid... I'm not seeing him joining interplay in the near future.

Hello all,

Man, I really don't know what to make of this.
The fact that Herve is still in business and that he is hiring people again for a development team.

I have the idea that the final blow might still happen and puts Interplay for good out of its misery but it seems Herve still has some tricks up his sleeve to keep this undead beast going on.

This is a good sign, wait who am I kidding, sorry for the pessimism that will now follow.

If they want to use it as a cash cow, it's likely to be first person, it would be nice if they just made vb into an mmo, but do they even still have the code for vb?
Black Isle won't be working on it, not the bi we knew 2 years ago anyhow.
This won't have any ongoing storyline, this is an mmo remember, so no quests other than "save mr piggles from radscorps" and "get me some jet".
This won't be turn based, how would that work in an mmo? They would either have to pause the whole world for combat, or just pause a small region, or just simulate pause for battling players. I really don't think it would work in an mmo.

However, there is a shitload of great stuff you could do with this that can't be done in a fantasy/medieval world.

It's much too early to say all of this stuff but, I've thought for a while now that its a stupid idea, I can't believe they are going ahead with this.

Go give Darkwind a play. It doesn't have all the answers, but it is definately a starting point for a turnbased mmo.

Probably, but they lost the right to use or redestribute single player elements of Fallout, and a legal department could make VB out to be such.

Besides, I doubt the engine can run as an MMO.

Current MMO trend is nothing less of "Fantasy setting, elves, magic, dragon" clone. If someone can comes out something fresh and innovate, why not? I'm eying the next MMO developed by Avatar Reality which utilize the Crysis engine and is about Mars terroforming.

Edit: Okie.... maybe the 'second-life on Mars' is not a good sci-fi mmo game idea after all but hey, getting away from the usual hack and slash is refreshing right?
But a Fallout-setting mmo... :?

I wonder if Herve has learn his lesson hard enough though. MMO business is not cheap this day due to its service fees (bandwidth, server, 24hour tech-support). Unless you found a hidden Nazi gold mine it's tough to maintain the service.
