John Carmack, the programmer responsible for Doom, Quake, and more, has left id Software completely.

“John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," id's studio director Tim Willits told IGN. "John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well.”

I'm one of those that thinks that id lost its way and relevance after Quake 3. At this point I don't know what value this studio has anymore for Zenimax. Their IPs aren't that valuable nowadays and with Carmack gone they can't use the studio as an "engine creator".

Regardless, end of an era.

Wow, he was the last well known member of the old 'crew', wasn't he?

To be honest I thought he had left Id years ago and only then found out he was still with them.

Will this BTW affect Id software much?

I doubt it, Carmack AFAIK wasn't involved that much anymore with the projects they were doing (aside from the tech stuff). Who knows how the higher ups at Zenimax will react, though? Personally I think id won't survive for long. The only project they have is Doom 4 and rumours has that its development is a mess.

Do you have any links on the development of Doom 4? I would be interested in going through these.

I am also not that surprised as the game has been in development for quite some time, hasn't it?
Perhaps mistaken with another title but didn't they start completely over a while ago?

Hopefully he will form his own company, and make some badass FPS games. The ones that ID released recently have been disappointing, imo.

Read the first link, seems Carmack is going to focus on something else.

Why would he form another company if it was HIM that sold it in the first place?

Anyway he seems to be done with game development. Now he works for Oculus VR, a company that is working on the Oculus Rift, a head mounted VR display.

Carmack was always about complexity of programming rather than games.

Before smartphones, he managed to put in translucency and rudimentary lightsourcing into the versions of Wolfenstein RPG written in slow-ass Java.

It's always been about the challenge for him, about squeezing the most out of hardware. During development of Quake, he bet that he would put in realtime lightsourcing into the game within one hour. He won the bet.

Games just happened to be a cutting-edge target for his talent.
