While Bethesda did not hire Mark Morgan for Fallout 3, Game-OST lets us know the Fallout and Planescape: Torment composer has been hired for Human Head Studios-developed and Bethesda-published Prey 2.
A few minutes ago a cult composer Mark Morgan has officially confirmed our website he and Jason Graves are writing the soundtrack for Prey 2.

As Mark Morgan told Game-OST, he is responsible for that part of ambient and electronic music in general, while Jason creates an orchestral tracks. We will find out the details during creation of the soundtrack.

Let's hope the man can stay away from Aphex Twin during the production. I was shocked to hear such blatant plagiarism in the Fallout 2 soundtrack, a soundtrack I had loved for years.

He can use whatever excuse he wishes, but that was outright plagiarism, and in music, that is a no-no for credibility. "Make it sound like this", doesn't mean "Just use this Aphex Twin track verbatim, add sound effects over the top of it, and put your name on it."

Eh, dead horses aside (and I'm not talking about the tribe), did we actually hear anything from the soundtrack proper? I haven't been following Prey 2 closely but between trailers and game footage I can really only remember Johnny Cash's cover of Rusty Cage (I enjoy the original more, btw).

Hurray, the Aphex Twin discussion, let's do that!

I'm not going to discuss or debate anything. It's plagiarism, plain and simple. I know we live in times where that doesn't matter to most people, but it some circles it still does.

"When Interplay was thinking of using me for the game, they sent over some music that they liked and wanted me to do something similar as a demo. The CD they sent me had no titles or artists’ names, just a few pieces of unidentified music. I gave Interplay what they wanted and I think they must have used some of my demo in the final game. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with the work of Aphex Twin. To me, it was just my interpretation of what Interplay asked for."

Sounds like he was just doing his job.

There is a difference between "making something similar" and "let's outright copy the shit".

It was a a few tracks. Probably just meant to give people nostalgia

So is there any track from the Prey 2 OST already available somewhere? I am tensed to listen to it.

demo? hmm...
so why those DEMOS got REMASTERED?
not FINISHED or REMIXED... :?
there is difference between sampling, homage
and simple rip off.

He's really lucky to be working in music at all at this point, and I'm sure the people he works with probably aren't aware of his plagiarism.

Let's also not forget the guitar riffs he stole from The Stand soundtrack, used in the Fallout 2 map screen. He worked with the man who composed the music for The Stand, and then those same slide-guitar tracks just magically ended up in the Fallout 2 map screen. I'm sure it was just on a demo tape from Interplay...

Which song was that?

It was Redding theme, actually, not a map music. And no way he stole it. I'm pretty sure it was done ligally, stuff like this happens all the time in show business and video games.

For instance, Ennio Morricone used Beethoven's "Fur Elise" in his piece "Dopo la Condanna". Is Morricone plagiarist? Heck no, he just used another's work to make his own work better.

Wow, that is very similar to VATS song indeed. Had no idea!

Still, he also composed Planescape OST which was brilliant (and Fallout 1 and 2 OSTs are brilliant too, even if some songs are copied and modified).

Mark Morgan also wrote the soundtrack for "The Stand". He just reused the riff.

Snuffy Walden was the composer for the music in the Stand. Morgan said he was working for Walden at the time. Morgan is also not a guitar player, while that is what Walden is known for... Morgan isn't even credited in The Stand.

It's not the same as using Beethoven (which is public domain, and everyone recognizes it). For one thing Morricone gave credit to Beethoven. He wasn't using some unknown piece of music, and taking credit for it.

Jason Graves has done some awesome work in the past, looking forward to hearing what they have in store for Prey 2.
