NMA Community to make a mod?

Eternal

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
What say you? Why not pool our resources and love of all things FO to make a full on FO3 mod once the tools are released (if they are released)? I'd be willing to contribute in any way I can (writing item descriptions or beta testing, I have done professional beta testing and for some reason bugs seem to FLOCK to me in most games)

edit: Of course my ability to help will have to wait till my computer can handle FO3 and I'm not playing it on my SuxBox360. :P

If a good idea comes along, why not

As long as it isn't just an isometric turn-based childkilling mod which people seem to want, lol

Then again I'd personally love to see Fallout 1 or 2 recreated with the new engine, could be fun.

indeed, the idea has to be good.

I'd be most interested in a mod that "improves" the fallout 3 experience, mainly through updating dialog trees, removing or replacing the mainquest, and adding quests, assets, weapons and such.

I'd LOVE to work on a fallout 3 restoration project.

FO1 / 2 would be an interesting recreation to be done with updated graphics and engine.

I personally would like to see a return to form with turn based die rolls for combat (including damage listings *Raider takes 35 damage* *Raider's Left Arm is crippled*
*Raider Drops Super Sledge*
*Raider offers you a Cold One and a truce*

I personally think that DC is an interesting setting for the Fallout Universe, I'd like to see other areas explored though (maybe New York?) I'd also like to see a burnt out Pentagon (Complete with government secrets! and every box has a prize!)

A good start though would be to just fix up FO3 with some of the following features:

Deeper Dialog Trees with more branches to allow a larger area of good - neutral - bad, with many choices ending up being good intentions that go bad thanks to human error or greed.

Fix DCs geographical layout being wrong and make it more in tune with the real DC (not required to be exactly the same per-say just no blatant disregard for architecture and layout of the city)

Alternative sources of power / energy / life styles. Too many places have working lights or running water. I'd love to see the return of the flare and some wall torches.

True consequences, I.E. you can't save everyone all the time every time. Sometimes saving one group of good people may in the end mean the loss of another group of good people. Also the return of the ability to kill any NPC despite age or storyline requirement, but rather than simply having the NPC die and nothing happen, it affects the outcome of other quests as well as main storyline sections (hopefully rarely making the game unfinishable)

Location, Item, Environment descriptions, colorful descriptions of things you were looking at, smelled, or touched were a pretty strong staple in the original FOs and in my opinion should return.

If possible, an action point based combat system affecting not only shooting but moving and enemy actions (doubt its fully possible though) even if this still leaves the game in a first person / third person game style.

Weapon Modifications, I think that with the advent of makeshift weaponry the ability to modify your weapons capability (accuracy / range / damage / firing rate / penetration) would make the ability to utilize work benches even more appealing.

Increase in difficulty, meaning a huge reduction in ammo / stimpacks throughout the game, and more weapons that are broken or near broken when you find them (wont find broken weapons on NPCs unless you shoot the weapon and it breaks it of course) Also different levels of NPCs would carry different conditions of gear, a BoS member is going to take A LOT better care of his armor and weapon that your typical raider, and a trader will take better care of the weapons he is using so he doesn't lose his merch to a couple of raiders, of course scavengers would have poorly kept gear as they are relying on things that they find, steal, or loot off corpses.

These are a few ideas I'd like to see integrated into a single mod, if everyone can come together maybe we can find some sort of common ground of things most of us want to see and work on that.

edit: Also I want to see more sensible item locations, meaning no finding 4 vacuum cleaners in one house, or finding a leaf blower inside a child's school desk. Some things I can let slide (gun cabinets inside of the library makes sense due to fortification by BoS / Raiders)

I would be happy to see FO1 and 2 in a new engine, and then a totally better look, more like the origianls, for this Oblivion with Guns

Just a small word of advice about adjusting the geography in general, don't. Minor adjustments are fine but for the most part if its a structural adjustment of a building built after 1950 just don't. Technically Fallout falls under the alternative world theme. So its going to be different. Then again I did see some interesting flaws in history to say the least. Even then as one of the developers said, the entire world which fallout was set in actually diverged from our own about the end of the 17th century. Major and minor events seem to have occurred which helped that. Most of the differences we see are the results of those changes.

The major flaws I see in the game aren't the camera angles. Isometric just isn't that big a issue for me. Its a bit to nostalgic.
Combat balance though...

We could go towards a more turn based combat. I personally am working on just balancing it so VATs plays a greater part in the combat. Less damage per hit. More hits. Making it a effectively turned based game since your in turned combat. :D Mind you out of VAT combat would be equally balanced to make it fully FPS.

It mite be nice to simply put to a vote what the majority of people want and all work towards that goal. A mod developers manifesto:D

As far as I'm aware, in fallout 1+2 the world diverged from ours right after WW2, not in the 17th century.
Hence the 1950s theme.

Well assuming that we don't just revamp FO3 to make it really FO3 we could toss around some ideas for place locations for the mod, possibly a couple of story concepts.

I've been trying to think of a good idea for a fallout storyline, of course it would help if I boned up on the lore since I'm not exactly an expert on it by any means.

Here is a rough idea of what I was tossing around in my head maybe some lore-o-philes can tell me whether or not an idea like this would work in the canon of the series.

It takes place back on the west coast, between FO1 and FO2, I figure that we could revisit some old towns and see how they have changed since FO1 (assuming the canon ending of course) and possibly visit some of the towns from FO2 BEFORE hand allowing you to explore just how things in some of the towns came to a head (maybe even setting in motion some of the problems that The Chosen One faces in his adventure?)

You start out as a person who has grown up and lived with a group of scavengers living inside a desecrated and burnt out vault. I haven't quite thought of what causes you to leave the vault, I was thinking an attack by Raiders that forces you to flee, but I haven't really thought up an overarcing questline.

Now its been a few years since I played FO1 or 2 so correct me if I'm wrong, but in the events between FO1 and FO2 the enclave started to encroach upon the land and gaining power for the events in FO2 right? (if I'm wrong than I'm sure we can come up with another way for this to work) I was thinking that through the game you may come across quests that open up other quest lines while closing some at the same time, eventually leading you down the path of possibly joining an outpost of the Enclave, or a branch of The BoS (possibly some 3rd neutralish faction that is in resistance to being governed by either party) The Enclave would have to appeal to the player without seeming to be straight up 'evil side' that way you can join the enclave without having to go through and rape and pillage every town and be bad, rather its possible to be good and unwittingly be helping the bad guys.

The final showdown would a quest to take out a key member of one of the opposing factions, thus either causing the enclave to send in reinforcements and push the BoS back in an attempt to secure more territory (this would be the ending if you succesfully take out the required enclave leader as the BoS, so while you WON the game, in the end the events of FO2 would still be the same) and taking out a key member of the BoS would allow the enclave to further push their reach deeper.

A. this is something I've thought up without looking at any lore so I'm SURE its full of plot problems and inconsitancies.

B. This is something that I've only been tossing around in my head for a few hours and needs ALLLOOOOOOT more fleshing out to even be the overarcing story, much less any sidequests, new towns, ect ect.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

BTW this is assuming we don't simply turn FO3 into.. well FO3: This time its not Oblivion.

I'd suggest we use Los Angeles as area. This way we could use the brotherhood, deathclaws and the ncr storywise while maintaining a city theme ( but with more wastelands as fo3)

Fallout 3 IS NOT a true fallout game
Fallout 3 IS NOT oblivion with guns

I suppose if you absolutely hated oblivion, you might feel like it was, but i put about a thousand hours into oblivion(though i would have gone insane if it weren't for mods) and the games only really feel the same in melee combat and when you talk to npcs and the world freezes...

I think setting a new project in L.A. is a bad idea, even on the entire west coast, simply because you would mess with canon

New York, on the other hand, sounds like a very good location, assuming you could pull it off.

There is a touchy subject, lets assume we decided to go with New York. In this america, what happened to the World Trade Centers? I personally that having the WTC be the 'final area' which has been taken over by whatever antagonist would be a good idea, but many may consider it 'tasteless' or just plain wrong.

My feelings on the WTC thing is that Fallout has always been more about 'The Red Menace' and Cold war era propaganda, and while parallels between our current state of fear based society with near witch hunt status for 'terrorists' and the Cold War eras fear of communism and threat of global warfare, I don't believe that current issues like Al-Qaeda (no matter how old they may be) should be directly influencing the Fallout universe.

This is my opinions though and I respect your thoughts to the contrary and actually would like to hear them.

Whatever man...

For the NYC idea, I think even the design would be tricky to do. NY is my bigget and "higher" than DC ;)

That is very true, not just from a game design perspective would it be a large undertaking, but from a TIME perspective. Bethesda has paid employees and worked on FO3 for quite a while to make DC, while we would likely only have a small handful (my guess is at the very very very most... 3) of people making the maps and those people also would have to juggle real life and recreation into the mix as well. I think from a financial, technical, and time perspective doing NYC would not be feasible. However, what about just Manhatten island?

Might simply not be feasible, however don't discount anything YET, lol. I mean the tools aren't even out yet.

BTW, yes I know that every couple of months some newbie comes along spouting about how 'we should make a new FO lets use such and such engine reprogram such and such, and do such and such. and it all falls apart before it even gets started. However I think I can take a bit more realistic approach to a project like this than most of those people.

A. I don't expect all new material and a completely revamped engine, there simply isn't enough time/resources/need to do these things. I think that with the amount of textures and models already IN FO3 that very little would need to be made in addition to make a good game, simply learning what to use, how often to use it, and where to put it can greatly influence the quality of a game / mod.

B. While I'm sure I and many others have plenty of 'lofty' and 'pie in the sky' type of ideas I'm sure many of them aren't feasible without writing so many lines of code you might as well be making a whole new game and being paid for it.

C. I don't expect this project to be finished by any set date I fully expect it is something that will be in the works for a very very long time. Even if it means working on it by myself.
