Ancient One
In our election the Labor Party had a positive campaign, concentrating on health, education and the environment.
The Liberal Party (really conservative) had a simple scare campaign claiming that they would continue their strong economic management and keep interest rates low (disregarding the fact that Australian politicians cannot control world economics however much they would like to) and that the social reform of Labour would automatically lead to economic meltdown.
Because people are ignorant, fearful bastards, John Howard won a record fourth term, and what is worse is the conservatives now practically control the senate (upper house) as well. This means that they can do whatever they want. Howard will be happy as now he can try to destroy the trade unions and workers compensation, sell the monopoly of our telecommunications company Telstra, continue to destroy old growth forrests and let American media moguls and big business take over (to name but a few of his initiatives).
Bush and Blair were keen to congratulate him, that other member of the coalition of the willing (although we didn't want war and our 'partners' always forget Australia, although terrorists won't).
I am very disappointed with the cynical ignorance of my fellow countrymen, and even though support for the Greens increased, it was nowhere near as much as I would have liked.
I only hope that this disturbing trend is not repeated. Bush and Howard together once more would make the world a much more dangerous and unjust place.
