Your best bet would be to look for it on Ebay. Game has also been released for GBA and PSX, though, for me, original version for SNES is by far the best.
About the setting... I couldn't put it any better than the game itself, so just watch the intro instead
Pros:
-Amazing music. Using nothing more than limited chiptunes, Nobuo Uematsu creates musical scores, that stay with you long after you've stopped playing. Nearly every character and location has its own musical score, and each and every one is amazing in its own, special way.
-Deep characters with rich personalities and backstories. Although they are just 16x24 pixel sprites, characters in FF VI show emotions no multi-million polygon character is capable of. Each one of them has their own motivations to participate in the story, each one of them has a unique story and personality, and I guarantee, you'll care about and root for every single one of them by the end.
-Interesting and immersive story.
-Cool turn-based combat system.
-Great use of SNES' Mode 7
Cons:
-Very linear and not really much to do outside main storyline.
-Uneven difficulty level. Some parts are incredibly easy, and some inexplicably difficult. Few battles leading up to it, are very hard, yet final boss is a pushover.
-Magic system can easily break your characters, and make them overpowered, if you powerlevel, altough limited MP counteracts that somewhat.
Despite aforementioned flaws, Final Fantasy VI is an absolutely stellar game, worth every single minute you spend with it. Not to spoil anything, but final sequence is simply amazing. Half an hour of wrapping up the story leaves player satisfied, and shows amount of care I haven't seen before, or since. I would go as far, as to call it one of the best games ever made EVER.
