Antediluvian as Feck
Having...ah...vented my political spleen for a bit, and frankly I have been wondering about curtailing it save for the fact that we tend to ferret out the truth or at least wave the bullshit flag, AND find some of the most incredible and unbelievable things...I feel the need to share some of the more fun things of browsing NASA's sites. The second one isn't too impressive, but the first one just BEGS to be used for a space UT2k4 map. :D

First, the Hubble gives us a view of the Orion Nebula.

Then the Spitzer has the center of the Milky Way.

Pretty cool stuff. Hate to think of the Hubble getting retired when there's still so much to learn.
 
It always startles me that we have so much bloody money to pay for absurd foreign policy decisions, yet can never spring on scientific research. How do people get off chiding NASA for its budgetary oversight flaws while simultaneously cutting out any last vestige of civilian space exploration in the near future?

Oh wait, we could go tell them to 'liberate' Mars from those green-skinned terrorists...

It'll be really funny when a foreign power uses its advanced space technology to send weapons up into space to destroy our nukes as they launch when they decide to fire their own nukes at us. Then they'll change their minds about funding for space programs.

New frontier indeed...

Amazing pictures! It does seem ashame that Hubble is being retired... Space is absolutely amazing...

You are missing the point. It's not a matter of whether to fund space research or military hardware. It's a question of who gets the government contracts.
