The New Vegas soundtrack (not the radio songs)

Starwars

Mildly Dipped
I'm currently listening through the original music for New Vegas, the tracks composed by Inon Zur. And I gotta say that he did a really good job overall with this, I normally don't enjoy his work at all. Especially if you listen to the dungeon music, it really hits home with the ambient feel and some of the tracks could fit in very well in the older games.

I also enjoyed the more violin based music that we hear in Goodsprings.

The worst track has got to be the Hoover Dam with its annoying "military" feel, that always takes me right out of the game when I play.

Anyhow, what are your opinions on the original music in NV?

Yeah, I am usually not very fond of Zur's work either, but I think in NV they let him experiment a bit. There are the violin pieces which fit quite nicely to the early "western ghost town" theme, but also the more darker ambient pieces sound good. New Vegas is one of the very few games where I can even listen to combat music (faster paced/more tense) without needing to vomit, it's subtle and not annoying.

Only thing I don't like is, as you already said, the more "militaric" themes, not only in the dam as you mentionend, but at McCarran etc. I don't think these fit very well.

All in all, one of the few modern soundtracks not being the epic wardrums/orchestra stuff. I like it.

The background theme at Hoover never ceases to annoy me. It makes it feel like you're perpetually in the midst of some suspense-thriller that nobody bothered to inform you they were filming. I feel terrible for the soldiers stationed there. Can you imagine how hard it must be to take a dump with that playing?

While I would still prefer a Mark Morgan-esque soundtrack, Zur's take on NV wasn't all bad. Still miles better than the shit he has done for Fallout 3. Good lord I hate that soundtrack. One of the worst in all of gaming history. Maybe I'm just odd, but it's not really the shoddy writing or shallow gameplay that really breaks Fallout 3 immersion for me. It's that damn shit soundtrack. I replace it each and every time.

I agree with the sentiments here. Fallout 3's OST was... well I don't want to start my day off with awfully resentful statements, but suffice to say, I didn't like it at all. So, knowing that Inon Zur would still be composing for FNV (even though Maestro Morgan's music was also going to be used) made me tread warily. I still don't like it as much as Morgan's more industrial-like compositions, but it's not bad. Nothing too memorable, but it's very fitting for a game that's a continuation of Fallout 2.

My opinion is that the NV soundtrack includes a handful of gems. I love the Doc Mitchell theme, and I think some of the ambient background themes, such as this one, this one, and this one, do a good job of setting the desired mood.

I even liked the Hoover Dam theme, which many here have voiced their dislike for.

However, trying to match Mark Morgan's masterwork was a very tall order, and overall, I find that the New Vegas soundtrack falls short. When I was playing the game, it was for the majority of the time a clear improvement whenever a Zur track ended and a Morgan track began. That should sum it up pretty well.

It also peeved me that my favorite Morgan tracks, such as the Vats theme, were not used anywhere (unless i missed them, in which case do tell me so, but don't name the location).

What I found way worse than the failure of Zur's respectable effort to match up to the quality of Morgan's ambient soundtrack was the the battle themes. Whenever there was a fight, the nice ambient track would stop playing and be replaced by what I invariably perceived a boring and forgettable battle theme. I have played enough games to know that battle themes, when done well, can indeed add an impressive effect, but this was not it.

does there happen to be a mod that disables battle music? if not I guess I can just replace it all with something else.

and Fallout 3 had a couple good songs, none of them very Fallouty though.

Didn't FO3 just recycle the original Brotherhood theme throughout the entirety of the open wasteland.
