The Opokonverob project : call to arms

A Smooth-Skin
I'm making a little announcement to the NMA community, because you're all a lovable gathering of hard-ass role playing game amateurs, and we are in need of people just like you, right now.
We're searching for contributors to actually make a game. Not a mod, but a standalone game.

So what is the Opokonverob project ?
It is a story-oriented role-playing game (RPG) project, like in the good old days.
It was born after hours of stimulating discussions about what makes a good RPG. We’ve had the feeling we had to act because our ideas were far from being undoable. That we should transmute them into a game and that we had the ability to do it.
The ultimate goal is to provide a small-scale multi-player experience similar to a pen'n'paper RPG
BUT
We know such a project will only build itself one stone at a time, so our first aim is to develop a small single player story.

That's why we need you.

The infrastructure is quite ready. For the past two three years I’ve been working on the engine, which is seriously starting to become usable. It is a polyvalent top-down game engine, RPG oriented.
The MONK Engine is the technical basis upon which we intend to develop the Opokonverob project. It's still an early alpha version, with its bugs and quirks, but it's enough to start doing serious work.
It's a C++ core with Python bidings so all the game mechanics can be prototyped in a timely manner.

Opokonverob is a serious project currently based in france, which aims at a commercial outcome : the indie RPG scene is only begging to be born, and we are searching for people wanting to invest a consequent slice of their time, with the aim of finishing a game and selling it. We are not specifically searching for french contributors, but the possibility of meeting in person somewhere in europe would be great.

At the moment the project consists of two members working on the project, but ideally we’re aiming at a team of three or four.
We are searching for people skilled in one or more of three fields : programming, game mechanics design, and graphic design.

The game itself is already mostly set-up on the conceptual level : all the game mechanics and principles are written black on white somewhere.
The story takes place in an underground city, a hostile environment where the dwellers have a rough time trying to survive. The accent will be put on social interactions between factions, crews and gangs, which will evolve by themselve. We are aiming for quality elements in a small game rather than quantity.
The mechanics are intended to be on the unforgiving and rough around the edges part of the RPG spectrum. You will not spend your time gathering expensive items, you will not spend your time heroically killing legendary creatures.
If you’re interested about the setting we’ll be glad to tell you more.

Note that nothing is pressing matters yet. The timescale will be long anyway.
The scope of this announcement is to make contact with potential teammates, see how we get along, and eventually start working together.

So, who hasn’t yet given up the dream of creating his own game ?

It sounds quite interesting, only the mention of multiplayer elements is a bit a stopper for me (would've prefered a single player cRPG). All the best luck to you. :)

Indeed it does. I was never to eager to make a game myself because it takes a crapload of time. I do still have an idea for a flash game though - got the concept for it and the sequel (all the way back from 2009 or '10).

I don't think that multiplayer sounds very well either. A serious RPG is usually a singleplayer experience, otherwise you have thousands of players complete the same quest, go into the same dungeon with respawning NPCs, etc.

I get it and I understand what you fear. I'm not a fan of multiplayer myself apart from strategy games. But it will be nothing like the common multiplayer RPG experience.

The systems we are working on are meant to be interesting in a single player environment, as we are going for a story/meaningful events driven game.
Alone or not, you'll be in contact with factions and gangs evolving by themselve, fighting and interacting between each other. For example you'll strive to progress in the local drug dealer gang and interacting with other PC will layer on top of that.

We'll start with a single player environment anyway because it's easier to get noticed / appreciated this way.

If I knew anything about game design (or French) I would join. Sadly, I do not. However, I would like to say good luck to you guys. :salute: Hope it turns out well.

I'm no programmer, but I work in IT so I'm good at trouble-shooting, and I could write a thesis on game design, so I'd love to beta or even alpha test it.

Looks really cool. I'm nowhere near france and mostly a fiddler and a kludger when it comes to programming but I've been at it for ten years and know a thing or two, would be glad to help out however I can. I don't know much about python but I'm pretty good with c++ and programming in general so I could learn python syntax quickly enough to let you get some good out of me. Here's an example of my werk.

Farmerk : to be honest I did follow your progress with your engine, as I'm following most similar projects that were announced on NMA, and it's always a been a pleasure to see other motivated programmers do their stuff

I think the best service you could do us would be to play around and hack around with the python code when we'll release a playable distribution. Like I said, since game mechanics code is written in Python, you should be able to literally write your own game by modifying ours.

Oh by the way : Python is easy to get a grasp on if you have some programming background, and a pleasure to work with, so it should be a piece of cake

This will be our next step : polish the combat and basic interactivity systems, publish a working demo, and see what comes back to us !
Then you'll be able to alpha-test it as much as you want

Also, the dialogue system and interface is in place
