Tips on making good player faces?

Maybe this will work in New Vegas:

Take a preset and then modify it to your liking - a lot easier than making a new one from scratch. Don't try to make a caucasian female since they're universally ugly for some reason.

I also hear there's a way to GECK-edit a character and then insert the preset into the game.

I press "random" over and over again until a face comes out that looks ok. Then I adjust hair and color and be done with it.

The Charactercreator is a bugger to work with. This is mainly because if you move one slider others slide too. You can create far better faces using the geck, but its a bit tedious. If you dont want to spend the time on gecking, look at the nexus for some presets or stick a helmet on top.

I noticed now that you never see the char from the front anyway unless in killcam mode or vats. I dont use either. I honestly dont remember how i look like

Yeah, if you want to run around looking like you just walked straight out some geeky anime

Do as Lexx said.

I guess its well konwn that there are lots of ridiculous mods on the nexus, but there are some good ones too. You just have to shift a ton of shit before finding a gem.

Mine is Male Caucasian premade #9 with dark brown Blasted Back hair and a chin dusting facial hair.

This. Too many feminine mustaches.

I find it's best to just go with a preset face, fiddle with the sliders a tad, stick some facial hair on him that will cover up most of the face but I won't regret later, then once in game find some head gear as soon as possible.

First play though I found a vault security helmet that covered up my face and made me look a bit judge dredd like, which was a pretty cool look. This time around I've managed to make a character decent look enough that I can get away with some reflective shades and a cool cowboy hat. However long you spend on it I think covering the eyes are essencial for a decent looking character. As anyone who's tried to replicate the human face in any form should know get the eyes wrong and the whole face looks wrong, get them right and half the works done. Bethesda got it wrong. So just keep them hidden.

On a slightly off topic note, part of the reason I covered my first characters face was because of the rediculous mustache I've come to regret. Are there no hair dressers in this game at all? I always find myself playing dress up with customizable characters in games and the hair is part of it.

I agree: if I could alter my character's face at will, I would be a much happier camper. Just having the chance at creation (when I can't save) or when I leave Goodsprings (where I have to rebuild my character and it's annoying as shit).

I was able to make a good looking male character that is reminiscent of the 50's style Hero, but I wasn't able to make myself at all because of the stupid slider linking. That's the stupidest design choice I've ever seen.

Would anybody care to elaborate on how to use the GECK for player character?

Or you can fire up the geck, save a new mod and make a new npc (actors, npc in the object window; rightclick and choose new). Under the tab face and advanced face you can change it to your liking. On the left side of the actor window tick the box character preset and save the mod again.

Enable the mod with fomm or launcher and start a new game. Your face should be the first preset on the apropriate race and gender. Choose it and your done. You dont need the mod after your first gamesave and can delete it again if you dont plan to use it for a new character.

edith: britishdude there is a haridresser. its
[spoiler:488ee55a26]a guy inside the kings building. he does your hair if you join the kings (do quests for the king and choose joining as a favor).[/spoiler:488ee55a26]

damn and blast another edith turning up
Just saw that theres a facegen savetool for FONV on the nexus now. Not sure if linking is allowed so go to the nexus and search for "FaceGen".

open your console and typer player.showracemenu then you can redo your face and hair etc.
( it seems thta you cant get any achievement in the session that you used a console command )

I wanted to put somebody's head in a vice in Vegas but it did not turn out how i hoped :/ imported the head into fnv it doesnt look the part :(

I gave up. All stock presets look like degenerates with genetic defects who live in their mother's basements and rape small animals as a hobby.

There are a couple mods on Nexus that add in-game NPC faces to the preset list. MUCH nicer. I took someone who looked pretty good (I think it was Caesar), fiddled a little bit with minor features, stuck on some facial hair and ended up looking just about as tolerable as I wanted to.

I dread the time I'll spend fiddling when I do a female playthrough.
