Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
This is a Brasilian film about a special police force in Rio de Janeiro, called BOPE. I don't really know what I was expecting, but I was surprised to see that the film actually seems to try to justify the use of what is essentially a death squad. It's kind of like watching Dirty Harry, except with the knowledge that not only does Harry exist in real life, he's been institutionalized.

Has anyone else seen this film? What did you think about it?

Well, I watched it. I thought it is a very good movie; a realist and neutral one. The movie doesn't take a side, it just shows what happens in slums in Brazil. I'm Brazilian and I can assure you: what is presented is how the BOPE (and most times the regular police) actually acts.
Today, they use the "caveirões" ("big skull"), armored vans built for war operations, to penetrate into the slums. That's what they need to deal with drug dealers.
*not being sarcastic.

ive only seen "cidade de deus" and was assured that the movie is quite realistic - and honestly, i cannot imagine this as being real. but that goes for many things. ill keep an eye open for that, thanks!

I've seen it a while ago, and even made a thread about it here, but I think no one out of Brazil did watch it back than - no replies in my thread T_T

Great movie, shows how bad things are in Rio de Janeiro, and doesn't try to justify the atrocities that bandits do. Yeah yeah, social injustice and lack of qualified education leads to crime, sure. But while it may explain crime, doesn't justify it, nor atrocities that a bandit DON'T need to comit dring a simple theft - it's even "unprofessional"...

Also don't forget that politicians are at the root of crime when it goes as far as it is in Rio (and Brazil as a whole, but a lot lighter than there); no ammount of education and social justice will solve the problem until "the house is cleaned".

I've seen the movie, and unlike Granite, I can't say it's true.

Because it's actually worse than showed in the movie.

Brazil is pretty much in a chaotic phrase of violence. Almost ANYWHERE on Brazil (at least in the Big Cities, I'm sure), thieves and criminals rule the streets at night. The big cities are having it rough, Belém is turning into a violent hellhole lately. I'm even thinking of moving out when I get myself a good ammount of money.
