What the...? Why did the Enclave remnants turn on me?

First time out of the vault
I'm on the final mission. I go up in the Hoover Dam tower, do something to a console (which causes some NCR heavy troops to fire on me), flip a switch turning a generator on, go outside, see the Enclave Vertibird fly over, and then all these guys I worked to recruit come out guns blazing!

What gives? I thought it was because Boone was wearing some Brotherhood power armor and I changed that, but the result is the same.

I sided with the NCR pretty much the entire game, but at the end, I've been doing what Yes Man has told me to do. I want to be the king of New Vegas, but I didn't mind if the NCR held the dam.

With that being said, I did get into a firefight and killed about 8 NCR guys when I went to the control room. There were two NCR heavy troopers with flame throwers guarding the room that said I couldn't enter. When I did anyway, they turned on me, but I still think I'm still in the positive with the NCR.

When I met with the remnants, I told them that they will be fighting to help the NCR and had to convince that one guy to stay with the group.

I really don't get it.

If you ask the Remnants to side with the NCR and then turn on the NCR, it makes sense that they'll turn on you too.

That being said the reason the NCR started firing at you was because you went into the room without permission, you're supposed to talk to the guy guarding the door outside and convince him to let you in or else the NCR turns hostile.

Makes sense.

I just read the quest walkthrough on the Fallout Wiki and I should have tried to talk to them first. That has to be it.

Hopefully I've got a saved file not too far back from starting 'No Gods, No Masters'.

I made the same mistake on my first Yes Man game too. I just assumed the NCR was shooting me because they realized I wasn't really helping them.

I believe it's that rather than have the Remnants be attached to your faction, they join whichever faction you tell them to fight for. So if you piss off the NCR (by not being polite to the men at the door and talking your way in) they'll be set to hostile along with the rest of the NCR. Which is dumb, they should join your faction, and defend you.

Well if you specifically tell someone to fight for a certain faction, then you start shooting people who are fighting for that faction, I think I could see where the hostility might come from.

Yeah, but if I tell steve to help those dudes and go out of my way to get steve to fight for them, you might think that steve might have the common sense to not immediately shoot me the moment he sees me.

Really, the way it should be done is "help me push back the legion/NCR so I can do what I gotta do.

Yeah but the point of helping House/Yes Man is that you're not supposed to fight the NCR too since that would be stupid, you're supposed to help the NCR push the Legion back then the securitrons roll in to force the NCR to surrender.
