So the news is out, lots of changes coming to Azeroth, but wow most of this stuff has been circling WoW's suggestion forums for years. Now they decided to bundled it all together. Part of me does not care, yet part of me wonders, maybe it still has a chance to get something right. But I do have a feeling they are shifting more resources on Diablo 3 and SC2. Did a lot more digging, seems they plan to rework all the classes making them funner. Personally I find this amusing, since it took them this long to figure out that there was something wrong.

Good call on the comparison, the over the top epicness is self mockery.

I wasn't impressed by WoW when I played it and I haven't been impressed by what I saw my buddy play last month. It still looks like a mediocre grind fest which basically ends up being about playing in the most unfun way (25 man raids) so that you can get the most out of it.

The only period where I really enjoyed WoW was before The Burning Crusade expansion. Before that things were mostly harder to get and if you weren't hard-core raider, which I wasn't, doing your best for a few epics and blues gave you a huge advantage and respect over majority of players which is what I expect from an MMO. Since half of TBC if you weren't "full epic" you sucked which completely ruined the game for me. All my friends and I stopped playing.

Then the Wraith of The Lich King came and we were happy and full of hope that maybe it will be better. Well atmosphere was but it became even worse gameplay wise: you needed to rush through levels like mad and every kid could get his hands on epics if we played few more heroics per day than you. Even if he sucks he would get items with time. No one has to learn tactics or anything, no one knows the lore of the game, everyone is just rushing to get a new purple item :(

I saw Cataclysm trailer yesterday and few of my friends were at my place when I downloaded it. We all agreed that it will be another disappointment but would we worth of seeing the old continents and explore them, but that's it. I wouldn't waste my money again.

Sorry for the lengthy post, I just had to let that out of my system. Thank you.

I used to play it in the ol' days too.
Mostly for the exploratory aspect as I love the art style and the Warcrafty-ness of the world.
It also felt a lot different too as raiding certain instances had an almost mythical quality about them rather than just running through them to tick them on the checklist.

Sorta interested in this as the Worgen look interesting as do the new areas.

Cold Zero pretty much sums up my feelings of world of warcraft. pre-tbc at least the extensive grinding were rewarding in some way. When I capped 80 with my first char in wrath I had 3 or 4 epics the same day. sillyness.

hopefully my friends do not manage to talk me in to playing again when this hits the stores because I can't afford to throw my money on crap like that.

I played the original and then TBC for a few years before quitting and selling my account. Friends convinced me to come back a couple months after wrath launched, so I bought the damned game again (along with TBC and wrath). Went from 1 to 55 in about a day (recruit-a-friend triple experience bonus), made a death knight and hit 80 later that week.

Originally, I was very excited about raiding again. I had enjoyed the awesome encounters in TBC very much. They were fun, hard as hell, and rewarding.

This time around however... raiding was a joke. Naxx, Obsidian Sanctum, Vault of Ancients were all being cleared by people who had no business raiding in the first place (Eye of Eternity was a decent challenge at first). There wasn't even a reason for doing all of the heroics, since you could just march right into naxx as a fresh 80 and be FULLY geared in epics by the end of that night.

Blizz recognized this, and said that the next instance would be HARD. Like... REALLY hard.

Then out comes ulduar.

At first, most encounters were bugged to shit, which made it impossible to do them. Then as the fixes slowly trickled in, we actually had what was shaping up to be the first challenging raid since BC before the massive blanket nerfing of raids.

I'm sure you can guess what happened next. The bad guilds who had been steamrolling naxx/os and collecting free gear every week hit a brick wall. They SCREAMED bloody murder. How dare blizz make an instance that they can't mash random keys and win in? Well, since the majority of players ARE casual (and money talks); ulduar got nerfed, and nerfed hard.

Before the nerfs, I had already killed Yogg Saron in both 10 and 25m, and had done most of the hard-modes (and had a very respectable set of gear for my efforts). Then they announced that since casuals were still failing at ulduar, all heroic instances and older raids (naxx/os/eoe) would start dropping the same badges that dropped in ulduar 25 (tokens that you'd get gear with)... so the worst of the worst would be running around in the best gear out there along people who worked for it, completely devaluing high-end loot. They did the same thing towards the end of BC as well, but did it much sooner this time around.

Anyway, the moral of this rant is that if you're a good player; stay away from WoW. Blizz will just shit all over you for the sake of casuals.

pre-BC, hunters could do average DPS as long as you had quarter-second reflexes and knew the rotation.

post-BC, hunters could do average DPS with quarter-second DPS, and excellent DPS with micro-second reflexes and knew your shot rotation.

if you were even off by a quarter-second on your rotation, you would fuck up so much and your dps would plummet.

there needs to be something to ease the low level grind.

DAOC has a command where as long as your account has a 50, you can /level and boom, all your new chars start at either 20 or 30.

blizz needs to do this as well.

its one of the reasons i dont re-up. hunters are fucked. and i cant stand the grind in WoW to make my druid/lock to top level. i only have 2 70s ( quit before tlk patch content started comming out ) and my priest. other than those 2, my highest chars are like 35.

will this be free expansion or paid for? if its paid for how are they going to manage the people without the expansion and those with??

lol at the Tropic Thunder segment. That movie was quite enjoyable.

As for WoW: never played it. Doesn't appeal to me at all, so don't care about any sequels.

Was a Dragon Turtle on those monster concept sketches? Yes, 3:38 had a Dragon Turtle. Worst monster ever.

Cool, this actually makes me a happy person for having quit right before I would've gotten TBC, instead I went and got myself a BA in history.

I remember the olden days, damn enjoyable stuff that was. Was in a pretty good guild too, one that recognized people with brains and used those people too. Clearing Molten Core in under an hour, finishing Blackwing Lair with excruciating attention to skill and strategy; aye, that was fun. I think I quit just before we killed the Twin Emperors in AQ40. God damnit that dungeon had some really hard spots.

Reading your post it seems like most of those kind of encounters have either been thrown out or have become irrelevant due to nerfed dungeons and skewed quest-rewards. Collecting tokens or whatever just feels a hell of a lot less epic than getting a well-earned item appointed to you by 39 other people I guess. I really liked 40 man raids...

i remember an interview with one of the visionaries for BC, he said they lowered it to 10/25 man raids because at 40 man raids, only 1% or less of the total wow population saw that content.

even after BC came out, it went up to 25% but they never saw the "new" stuff untill after they nerfed it and made it much easier.

what they do is make it lower pop req to do them, but when the instances first go live they make them hard as hell for the "first kill" guilds and then after they get the first kill, they nerf the hell out of them to make it more accessable. they nerf it untill the estimated population that sees the content hits 25%, then they stop nerfing.

Blizzard's servers must be destroyed, to unhook the innocent souls from the matrix.

^

Also, we can use the fat from the average wow player to fuel our starships and create a surplus of warmth for the inuits.

I played Wow...it was meh.

The social bantering between players was seizure inducing.(A big fat LOL at the rp servers) Not to mention the one sidedness of some servers.

And also...

It just got a little tiring when 50 blood elves were running around named CloudSephirothff7 or VegetaDrizzt and the fact that ALMOST EVERY SINGLE TAUREN has a reference in the fact that its a fucking cow.

I got out when i could, my friend is still a slave to it and Ragnarok(he swears he's not a weaboo.)

This new cataclysm add on is just another time/money waster, so that old raids will become more and more irrelevant, and grinding for gears will become all the more pointless.

From what I here, this addon is also one of the reason's Diablo 3 may not come out in 2010(although from what i've seen, diablo 3 is full of fail as is.)

Are you more upset because the game got easier or because more people are able to do end game content? I really don't see why it's bad to let more than 1% of the population be able to get to the highest raids. Especially with the expansions pushing the story so much.

Damn Blizzard, making content available for casual players because I am a WoW elitist who has the time to grind for hours on end for consumables and gear just to spend numerous more hours in high level dungeons!

Been there, done that. Never again. Back in the day I was clocking 12 hours a day on WoW. 40 mans and those lovely 17 hour AVs they used to have mostly.

I am considering going back and I am actually quite thrilled of how casual it has become. Now that I have a job I no longer have a massive amount of time to pump into the game. It is nice to see that anyone can just pick up the game for a few hours a day and still get somewhere and enjoy themselves.

is this going to be a free expansion? if not what about people who dont buy the expansion in the old lands???

oh, yea, its so casual that you can spend 3-4 hrs and get the same gear 3-4 months after the nerfs as the people who spend those 10-15 hrs prepping for a 5-8 hr raid run.

its one of the reasons i left. i want a great PvE experience that requires timing and precision from all players and for them to play at the top of their game to win. they dont want 40 man but want to do 25 man? thats fine, but the nerfing so everyone and their grandmother can do it is just stupid.

call me an elitist, thats fine. what i did it for back in the day was a sense of accomplishment. but i guess in these days of soccer moms and not keeping score in games has won people over.

the pussification of america!

i used to be a hardcore raider, but i quit when we opened AQ on our server. (so even before the exp)

quite bloody glad i quit. in the end, you're so fucking bored with the game that you realise that you're only playing for the friends who play it to (raiding became too easy, nothing left to explore, nothing of meaning to conquer). guess what? you can get in touch with those friends just as easily through other means. :)

sure, now i can no longer say that i'm in a top 10 worldwide raiding guild or anything, but at this point, i'd be ashamed to play WoW tbfh.

now, that's not to say i'll never play an MMO again. don't get me wrong. MMOs can be hella fun games...

What a miserable failure that was. Our server was large pop and crashed several times during that event.

we were a top class guild on an extremely low pop server... (we migrated away from a VERY fucking suckass crashy overpopulated server)

we had to work a fuckton to make it. i think our guild alone was responsible for about 1/4th of the whole AQ grind!

we opened later than the other top guilds because of that... but i just had enough. i did the whole grind, opened AQ and quit. guild dissolved & partially reformed the next day.

with the opening of AQ, it wasn't the whole boring grind & repeating the same raids over & over again for gear that got to me, but also the whole rape of the setting which became more and more obvious.

now they're tearing the world apart with Cataclysm? ugh! it seems like a cheap way to recycle everything really. nice shortcut, but sadly it also rapes a lot of what we had along the way.

WoW was actually pretty cool before the expansions and AQ40 and all that other nonsense. It was actually fun to explore, find parties to clear out instances and clear your quest log, and join a good guild to get into the tougher end-game instances. I couldn't bear to get back into it, though. The only thing keeping me going at the end was the friends I'd made.

Not to mention, they really have just gotten out of hand with the way they're treating the Warcraft universe. There were plenty of things they could've done with the story to flesh out and resolve certain aspects. Instead, they just keep adding in new, "epic," and ever more tiresome garbage. I mean hell, Jaina Proudmore has been cooped up in her tower for how long now? Ugh.
