Edit: ok, if the Jagermeister is not quite available I could go with the Detective, hell he's as close to an Investigator as one can get
why wouldnt he be?

Edit: I'll take

Dave – guitarist and mechanic
"You think I play a bass? Goddamn it, man! Learn to count! A bass has four strings... Does this have 4 strings? Sjeez! Every moron can play bass..."

Bob Larkin - Helicopter Pilot National Parks Service
"This is yer capt'n speaking, I'm going to autorotate this baby down. Hold on tight & please hang on to yer lunch..."

Luke - the Hunter
"Damn it! I need to contact my publicity agent. Fuck, this is big bucks. Can you picture it? Zombie hunting safari! I'm sure the euros and japs will eat this stuff up!"

Alrighty! In that case I'll pick:

Thomas - teenager- High School Dropout and Kitchen help

Damn this job sucks! I'm not going to wash dishes and floors all my life, you know, I'm thinking of going into the shoe-selling business. Now that is a career!
Hey Ashley, you want to do something after we get off? If we put our minds to it I'm sure we can find *something* to do in this sinkhole

Old Bud the Private Investigator-

Sonny, one more joke about old people and you'll be wearing your ass for a hat, understood? Now before you go and answer that I'd like to inform you that there are only two answers: 'Yes Sir!' and 'Crystal clear!'

Sean Blank- National Parks Service

I don't know what we are up against here but I'm sure it's nothing compared to a pack of hungry wolves or an angry bear!

I can't wait to get this started!

if the following characters have not been taken then I would like to take
Buddy the dog
Jim Kerr
and Alice, the history professor.

If any of them are claimed let me know and then let me know which ones are not so I can pick someone to replace them

Welcome Steve.

Alice- Well I admit she's got a couple of neat secrets for her.

Please catch up with the threads adn then post away. We've got quite a bit of game under our wing. Most of the OCC posts are general discussion.

Actually, Jim Kerr got a 78 on his first Fast Talk roll (there were two listed on Invisible Castle), which is higher than his skill level of 44, so that one does get an increase of 1d10. Don't feel bad about not getting many increases. There will be another chance at the end of every chapter. Other characters got little benefit as well. Bo got a measly 1 Sanity point and no skill increases, and Michael only got 2 Sanity. Stephanie and Mrs. Foo didn't get any skill increases either, but at least they got 10 on their Sanity rolls. I do like how Stephanie's Sanity is now 99, making her officially stark raving sane. Very fitting for her character. She can still lose Sanity, since she can always roll 100 and some things can take off a few Sanity points even if your roll succeeds.

Mr. Foo, Gary, Azadeh, and Erica Spears did clean up on both Sanity and a few important skills.

I would like to take
Airman Nathanial Lewis and if he is taken then Sgt Sam Black is good also. Please let me know which one I have as I am going to be making a list for myself to keep track of all the characters for various games I will be playing

You've got Lewis, Steve; nobody else has reserved one of the new characters yet, anyway. I'll send you his secrets by PM.

Alas! my indescision has payed off!

I would like to snake a couple of these cheracters.

Airman Justin Hockey- Fire Team 1

Airman Manuel Ortega- Fire Team 2

We already decided it's okay if you play four characters as long as you're sure you can, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea for existing players to take more than one of the new characters. This limits the options of new players who might not want to read Chapter 1, who would probably only choose from Kerry, the Warren group, and possibly Erica Spears and Joe Barring. If Welsh is okay with it, you can have both of them, but I'll wait until I hear from him before sending you secrets.

To be honest the Sgt Black and Airman Sheen group is a good one to play as this is a sniper team used to working with each other.

I am surprised that no one went with McCain- this is a central character. Each of the fire team leaders- the corporals- are important characters as well. These characters have some command power but are also subject to their orders from above.

My advice- since we won't start Chapter 2 for awhile- think about this a bit. Think of the powers and responsibilities of chain of command.

Yes, you can have a fourth character if you want. Since we don't have as many players as we'd like, this will mean more characters are played by the players, which is a good thing. Since we do have a few weeks before we start Chapter 2, though, we can hold off a bit. Once I send a character's secrets, any decision is locked in. Thus, from here on out you can reserve characters you'd like at any time (Stompie now has dibs on Justin Hockey and Manuel Ortega), but you can later change your mind provided we haven't yet sent you the secrets. Once your decision is finalized, a few days before Chapter 2 is due to start, then the rest of the secrets can be sent.

Steve, you may reserve a fourth character if you like. SuAside can also take one or two more characters. There's also a new player who was interested in playing but couldn't register because he needs a good email address. I sent him a couple of emails, but haven't heard back from him yet. It's also possible Gonzalez could return after his exams are over. There's a chance we might get one or more additional players, but we can't count on that.

The last few posts in Chapter 1 introduced the new characters and gave a little insight into their personalities. That, along with the character descriptions above, may give some help in making your selections.

re: mcCain

After some thought I have decided I would like to take McCain also if that is possible. If so can either Mr. handy or Welsh send me his secrets and also since I am putting this on a document to save, what the skills of Archetecture, Climb, Demoletion, Millitary Science, and Sneak do? Also can one of you tell me how good his French and Arabic are at 18% and 9% respectifuly. Thanks. Of course if there is somewhere on this board that I can find what all the skills mean then I will no longer have to ask all the time so if that is so then can you point me to the right place or if not make a page where the skills are listed?
-steve

You've got dibs on McCain, Steve, but we'll wait to send you his secrets in case you change your mind and want to select a different character instead in the next couple of weeks. Welsh made PDFs of some of the most commonly used rules. These PDFs contain a list of skills with descriptions of what they're used for (though a couple of pages with the skills listed before Biology alphabetically are missing). Some of the skills on the character sheets are not actually part of the skill list.

Architecture (not included in the skill list): The study of how buildings are designed, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. This could be used to identify a building's architectural style. It might also be possible to use this skill to determine where to plant explosives (using the Demolitions skill) in order to implode a building. At 18%, though, this skill is only a minor interest of McCain's and his knowledge of it is limited.

Climb: Used for climbing difficult surfaces (walls, mountains, etc.). Failing this roll could result in a fall. If you want to climb without being detected, the Sneak skill is also used. Even without training, people are reasonably good at this (40% base skill); McCain's skill is 62%, so he's pretty good at it. Wallace and Joe Barring used this skill earlier when they tried to climb on top of the truck at Brownson, but they failed their rolls.

Demolitions (not included in the skill list): Used to plant and set explosives (such as the Claymore mines the troopers carry). Also can be used to attempt to disarm explosives. Failure can have disastrous consequences. McCain only has 23% in this skill, which isn't all that good. This is better left to the other soldiers if possible.

Military Science (not included in the skill list): Knowledge of battlefield tactics and broader strategy in warfare, as well as other vital military-related issues such as logistics and supply. McCain's score of 53% is rather good.

Sneak: Used to move around without being heard. Can also be used with the Hide skill to avoid being seen as well. At 71%, McCain is very good at sneaking.

For language skills, a good rule is as follows (these skills cover both spoken and written language):
25% gives you the basics in a language, enough to get by on a day-to-day basis.
50% gives you good knowledge of a language, though your accent would still be apparent to anyone who heard you speak.
75% means you are fluent in a language, able to speak it like a native and with no detectable accent.

McCain's 18% in French is probably high-school level at best, and the 9% in Arabic is just a smattering. He won't necessarily understand either language if he hears it spoken or sees it written, but he'll have a chance.

Yeah, Handy is pretty much dead-on with the skills.

If you want those rules, let us know and we can forward them to you.

For my money, I think the most interesting new characters in this game are less the military security force types than the extras.

The SF guys are really grunts. They shoot and do military stuff, but they also generally follow orders. Unless you are taking a command individual- one of the sergeants or the corporals, I think much of time these guys will be looking for bad things. Their mission is simple- security.

Blanco and Spooner are specialists in the study of disease and infection. They will probably have some of the strongest connection with the rest of the T-Bone people. They are army related (Spooner is not even military) and are primarily interested in what causes the zombie infestation.

Ramirez is kind of out of the military chain of command. Technically drafted to assist the CO of the mission, he's DIA- kind of the CIA of the military. His primary mission would be to gather intel from the T-Bone group.

In otherwords if there is to be a joining of the two groups it will probably be up to Ramirez and Blanco.

The Comm people are there primarily to maintain the communications system. So if you are interested in the "impending nuclear war" problem- those characters would figure.

As for the SF people- there is tension among the ranks. Black and McCain don't like each other much. Black is fairly independent minded. McCain is unhappy with the op ("a precious waste of fine military resources") but is a "can do, obey the chain of command" type). Still he's not used to working this close with other Air Force types.

In terms of fire power you effectively have four fire teams.
1- 2 man sniper team
2 - 3 man SAW teams
1- 3 man command- with non-com, communications and medic.

How these folks will get along with the other T-Bone folks will be the stuff of the next story.

For the T-Bone folks, the question should be "what's next". As Luke points out, the diner is no longer defendable. But there is a complex below that will promise some secrets- not the least of which is how Kerry got there.

That said, the longer that you folks stay at the T-Bone the more you are exposed to a detonation of a nuclear weapon nearby. Happy the shelter also serves as a fallout shelter in a pinch.

I am tempted to weed out some of this thread if only to keep our character list simple. So expect this to move to "Zombie Apocalypse- Character discussion Part 2".

Ok threaded from the original thread-

But as a reminder- here are the new characters-

Below are the new characters from Warren AFB. I had tried to add them into the initial post, but apparently there is a size limit per post that was cutting off the end of the last character's description, so I have split them up. Kerry, the girl that was rescued from the secret prison, was added to the first list of characters and is available for players.

Existing players who want a replacement character may choose one of the characters below (except for Capt. Lereux and Lt. Malone, who are played by the Keepers). New players should choose at least one from the group below, but may optionally choose more.

I've tried to clear up incorrect and missing information, but there are a few stats and skills whose values are still unknown to me - maybe Welsh can clarify.

Also, Stompie still needs to roll 1d10 for Wallace's Track skill increase and 1d10 for Duke's Sanity increase.

The USAF Security Team’s mission is to provide security to the position. They are under the command of Captain Lereux, but are directly under the command of Edward McCain.
McCain is an old hand NCO, does not much like Black nor has much trust in Lereux’s capacity as a military leader. He also feels this mission is a mistake. Thayer should have been a baseball player instead of an USAF grunt. He often will double for First Aid if necessary and is the man to go to for a grenade throw.

Ortega is a dedicated military professional, but like his friend Duran, feels the sting of prejudice that may not exist. Well liked and respected, Ortega is very loyal to Alanen, but will consider and support the idea of leaving should the Warren CO plan to detonate a nuclear weapon over the base.

I just heard back from potential new player FearlessFred tonight, and he specified which characters he's thinking of playing. He's now got Sergeant Sam Black reserved. The other two he wanted to play are Manuel Ortega and Justin Hockey, both of which Stompie selected. If Stompie changes his mind and swaps out either or both of them, FearlessFred gets first crack at them.

FearlessFred still needs to set up an account. Welsh, is it okay if I let him know your email address so he can communicate with you?

Here are the new character reservations so far:
FearlessFred: Sergeant Sam Black

Steve: Airman Nathaniel Lewis (cannot be traded, as secrets have already been sent) and Sergeant Edward McCain

Stompie: Airman Justin Hockey and Airman Manuel Ortega

That still leaves available eleven playable Air Force characters (two more are played by the Keepers), as well as Kerry and the characters from Chapter 1.

Sure Handy, send Fearless my email. It's no great secret. Just check my posts- the email is listed.

Just ask him to put in the subject heading ZOmbie Apocalypse player- this way I know whos comin'

Hope you guys like the pictures. I change McCain's from Sgt Apone from Aliens to Carl Weathers from Predator. Weathers looked too tough for a Air Force communications officer. But Steve, he's your character so if you want to change back, let me know.

Well first of all can we get a picture for Alice so I have an idea what she looks like. Someone young and hot sounds good! Maybe that girl from Pirates of the Caribbean. Or maybe a picture of Winona Ryder!

For McCain, a picture of Samuel L. Jackson from the movie Swat which I found on IMDB sounds good. He is wearing body armor, has a machine gun slung on himself, and is adjusting a earpiece. That sounds to me like McCain
