My Commandos Mission Pack

So I figured I am not getting enough internet fame, so I'll spread the word a little more around the interwebs.

Just a few months ago I've released my mission pack for Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty. It can be found on my website and on ModDB. Check it out.

This mod adds 6 new missions + 2 bonus missions to the game. It was a shitton of work, but quite a lot fun for me. Modding Commandos is rather limited, but oh well. Most shit one can imagine is either working by default anyway (the mission types are always quite similar) or can be done with workarounds here and there.

So yeah. Long story short: If you don't own Commandos, buy it cheap on GoG. Then download my mod, install it, and play it, bitches. Oh well, if you guys never played Commandos before, it's probably wise to play the original games first, as my missions might be a little hard for the one or the other... After taking on the originals everyone should play my mission pack, though. :>

Dang, nice work. Good to see this old game still get love. I remember my dad was sort of obsessed with it, and I love world war 2 and the gosh darn beautiful 2d art.

But the games are so difficult for me, and the controls don't help one bit. I have a hard time controlling all of the characters at the same time.

hah yeah I know what you mean. Though I remember that I only played the sequel to Commandos 1. The last mission in Commandos, heh. Playing the game with 8 split screens at some point to follow the movement of every troup and your own soldiers to react quickly O.o. The game definitely had awesome mechanics behind it. I think there have been quite a few (more or less) succesfull clones using the same gameplay, just with a western setting and one set around Robin Hood. Those where the days! When gaming had still a lot of diversity :D

But only the first Desperados, imo. Never liked the sequels. Though, every once in a while, Desperados is a much harder game than Commandos, imo. Some of the missions are flooded with enemies, and a 100% stealth playthrough in every mission was pretty much impossible for me (which I can do easily in C1 + Addon).

was it a requirement to be 100% stealth? In commandos it changed from mission to mission as far as I remember.

No, but that's how I play it. Laming it out with "wait around the corner and shoot everyone with pistols" is boring as hell. They fixed this in later Commandos games with adding ammo and such. This "tactic" never really worked in Desperados, because you had to reload and guns were overheating.

I actually don't think Beyond the Call of Duty is harder than Behind Enemy Lines. In fact, I think it's easier. You get so much more stuff to use: Distract guards with cigs, control enemy guards, throwing stones, etc. If you know how to use all the available tools, then it's a time consuming game, but not a hard one. Same counts for my mission pack. It's only hard if you don't use everything I am giving you. :>

I preferred to do the stealthy approach, too. But sometimes I grew so frustrated I had to fall back on the ol' pistolling-all-the-enemies-to-death tactics. Man, I wish someone would make a game like this again.

I've never played these, but I see there's a Commandos + Desperado bundle on sale on GOG.com right this moment. Looks like Commados 1 2 3 and Desperados 1 2 for just over $6.

Only good for the next 15 hours or so.

Yeah. Buy it and then play my shit.

Commandos 1 + Addon + Desperados are worth it. Commandos 2 is ok-ish too, but Commandos 3 sucks. Never played Desperados 2... The controls, I felt like wtf. Also I didn't liked the 3d graphic for whatever reason.

/Edit: But I always find it funny how good every game is rated on GoG. Shows that only fans of a game rate the game. Based on GoG ratings, apparently every single game is truly good, which certainly is not how I perceived some of them when they got released decades ago...

Yeah, the reviews there are highly inflated. Personally I throw out all 5-star and 1-star reviews and only read the ones with 2-4 stars. Those are usually a lot more informative.
