Was Germany Still Divided by the Time of the Great War?

"Set Phasers to Fun."
As many here know, Germany was divided directly after World War II. Eventually, the two states were knows as West and East Germany, with the former being NATO-aligned and the latter being strictly loyal to the Soviet Union and bonded by the Warsaw Pact. Nowhere was this more prevalent than Berlin, where the Soviets had established the Berlin Wall to keep people apart. Typical commies.

Anyways, seeing as the Soviet Union never fell, was the country still divided? I've always thought so.

Additionally, the Soviets and the US were still enemies, but I assume that they were briefly banded together to fight the threat of Communist China- see my post on the 'Status of Taiwan' thread for more details.

Back to Germany, if it was still divided, how did it fit into the European Commonwealth? Perhaps only West Germany was a member rather than both East and West as a whole.

Discuss below.

Well, Gorbachev did allow them to break the wall, so it is possible that in the FO universe, there would be a leader who disbands the NSWP like Gorbachev, as well as improves relations with the West and allows the German reunification.

Actually, what if in Fallout, Gorbachev's plan to modernize the USSR worked and did not fail?

In an Adventure Time fan fiction I'm working on (don't ask, complicated cartoon) Gorbachev was never appointed, thus leading to a much more militant Soviet Russia without social reforms. I needed a way to explain why they existed until 1996, the year I set the 'Great Mushroom War'.

What if something like this could be applied to the Fallout universe? Your theory may hold ground, though, because the Fallout Wiki refers to it as the singular, reunified Germany.

I'm not sure after the Resource Wars and the oil running out it would even matter as Europe descends into petty ethnic warlordism. Not saying it isn't an interesting question to ask though.

Well, I was referring to the days before the Resource Wars. Of course, after the European Civil War all of the continent was a mess of trenches like in World War I, with Mad Max style warlords running around picking off survivors.

I don't think something like this can happen in the FO universe since a militant USSR would have very rough stagnation times. Very rough to the point that only a war can save them. Which I guess what happens in the fan fiction you're working on.

But if you want a reason outside the FO universe, well, the new leader would focus on improving the military of the USSR & allies. So the NSWP would have new gear, new training and the military budget of the USSR would increase, while the other sectors [medicine, etc] would fall down. This leads to poor living conditions in the USSR, coupled with the rise of the internet, would lead to various riots.

You can probably think of the rest. This assumes that the new leader is appointed in 1985 - 1986 btw, not 1990. (so the NSWP would still exist and not be disbanded)

Germany would have been a battleground between East and West European countries. Maybe not a nuclear apocalypse but certainly collapsed.

The question of whether there still is a DDR in the Fallout Universe has generally been broken up into three camps.

Option 01: Gorby comes to power as in our timeline, and institutes Glasnost and Perestroika, which lead to major reforms in the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact. However, the one major difference is that unlike in our timeline, the Soviet Union passes a modified version of the New Union treaty.

Option 02: The hardliners under Yegor Ligachev take power following the death of Chernenko. The Soviet Union does not reform, and the Warsaw Pact is maintained through military intervention.

Option 03: Gorby comes to power and his reforms are initially successful, but he's ousted during the August Coup by the hardliners, who manage through repression to keep the SSR's from declaring independence, but lose control of the Warsaw Pact countries.

I think that Option 2 would be the most interesting. Plus, it works well in supporting the Cold War type situation continuing well into the 21st century. Makes me start to wonder if the European Commonwealth and the Soviets ever got into a dispute or conflict.

I don't think it'd still be divided by the Great War. I think I see Russia as taking Gorbachev's policies and applying it well and making a Russia a nation more like modern day China with a friendly relation to the U.S. But the warsaw pact still fell through

Well it does seem that Russia and the US are on okay terms with each other so it's possible it became united.

Though Fallout is alternate history not fantasy, as it's a fantasy to think that you can make a competent Gorby.
