Female vs. Male Voice Actor

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Considering trying this game a THIRD time (I started two playthroughs with the male voice actor got about 60% through before getting tired of it and stopping).

I looked up the voice actors, it appears the female voice actress is Courtenay Taylor, who has a lot of good work. She did a lot of voice work in New Vegas, and portrayed Jack in the Mass Effect series. She's also been in Dragon Age: Origins and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. All great games.

In contrast, the male voice actor has been in Aliens: Colonial Marines, Call of Duty, and a lot of other games I have ignored entirely.

From what I have heard, the female voice actress is far superior in Fallout 4 and I'm thinking of trying one more time to play this game without cringing at the terrible voice acting by playing as the female character. Anyone using the female voice actress that can verify she's better?

In any case, voiced protagonist in Fallout is a fail.

I enjoyed playing with a female pc in Bioware games and other similar games duo to them having a more emotional tone than male pc´s. I noticed the same case on F4 pc.

She's better. The script is still idiotic, but her inflection and delivery isn't as poor as the male VA's.

I like neither but if I had to chose than the female. I don't want any voice acting when it comes to the character I create, just throw it out the window and don't look back. I would play the female if I didn't have to deal with forced marriage to some big nosed monkey and give forced birth to a lifeless baby doll.

I like the female voice actress. She really works with what little she has; it's a shame she had to get stuck with this game, because I would have loved her in literally anything else.

She's fun to use with the sarcastic options, because although they still represent the heaviest possible misinterpretation of the word, she sounds really sassy and that makes it fun.

On the recommendation of a friend I played my first two playthroughs as a female PC, and only recently started a male one. This made me realize that his incredibly boring inflection and tone is entirely intentional.

I'd often wondered why, when the female PC acts playful and teasing in conversation, NPCs react defensively or offended; it seemed like a bit of an overreaction at best and like the two voice actors weren't even in the same room when recording at worst. But playing through with the male character made me realize that every single conversation is tailored exactly to him, since he does react aggressively when choosing sarcastic most of the time, making NPC interaction far less nonsensical.

To me, this shows another predictable facet in the beautiful jewel that is Bethesda's contempt for proper roleplaying. This isn't just average laziness, either; many of the lines the NPCs speak are recorded twice, which you can hear especially with companions like, say, Codsworth, as their tones and inflections vary. What seems to have happened is that Bethesda went through the effort of putting the two actors in the same room so that the dialogue wouldn't sound awkward and disjointed but couldn't be bothered to actually change the lines to reflect the new voice talent, making anyone who wants to use a female NPC take a backseat in favour of their amazing, probably canon, Styrofoam white man that they've tried to fool us into thinking is a human being.

I don't know man. How can you be sure you are not letting your hatred of Bethesda invent more reasons to feel justfied in loathing them. I don't like it; it's one of the few features that most can agree on, but I wouldn't go saying such things unless I knew for a fact that's how it went down behind the scenes. All I can say is that it was mishandled, on account of them not doing it before. Maybe they'll try again in their next project or just abandon it outright.

I agree. I have NEVER, EVER seen a video game that was improved when it made a transition from text based, unvoiced dialogue to a voiced protagonist.

It did not work when they did it to Dragon Age 2 from Dragon Age: Origins, and it definitely doesn't work here. FO4 is pretty much the Dragon Age 2 of Fallout games anyway.

I think Mass Effect worked well because 1) it was always voiced from the beginning and 2) the voice acting, dialogue, and character animations are all superb. The animations during dialogue in Mass Effect are VERY well done, compared to gamebryo animations which are robots.

But I'm going to give Fallout 4 a go as the female protagonist and maybe it will be somehow less bad.

I actually rather enjoy most of Bethesda's stuff. I'll admit that the wording I used was a bit confrontational, but I did genuinely notice an odd discrepancy in how the female protagonist said something and how other characters reacted.

I don't have to shit all over Bethesda in everything I post on NMA, but it fits the theme rather well.

Female is way better, then I don't have to listen to Gruff White Male #2245.
There are actual *gruff* male voices in many videogames, and then there is Fallout 4 which sounds like a guy without a gruff voice attempting to simulate a gruff voice and it makes me cringe at times. Like when he yells "WHAR MY SON WHAR SHAUN WHAR!" at Kellog. I actually quit playing the game for a few days after that.

If the game had an actual gruff voice I probably wouldn't cringe as much. This guy sounds like generic Dad figure.

Yeah... it's hilariously cringe worthy.

That is the exact moment I installed the mute protagonist mod. Another reason was his dialogue every time I clicked on someone, "hey piper," just STFU already.

As others have said the female VA is much, much better. The dialog is horrible regardless, but at least she does her job well.

Reminds me of Jack everytime she talks. Jack from Mass Effect 2 in Fallout 4...they really wanted to have some Mass Effect in their Fallout.

She get's into the role of a... bland white female...

She just sounded less bored and more genuine. The male just sounded annoying especially when after 50 hours he finds Kellogg and freaks out. Over the last few weeks I have found it harder and harder to talk about this game. Apathy is probably the best term for what I feel. When all aspects of something sucks it becomes a chore to even explain what sucks.

I think they are equally terrible. And I am not even trying to be overly dismissive, I played a Female character through, just as generic as Dollar Store Troy Baker, sometimes she is even worse because it's obvious a lot of the lines where just thought up with DSTB in mind and the female option was just an obligation they had to fill out. Hell, the Female Protagonist feels like an even worse character than the male because she doesn't even have the "Soldier dude" excuse for jumping so fast to shooting every fucker she meets.

Oh you better believe she is bad too. With lines like that even Patrick Stewart would sound like shit...
