Underrated or overlooked sequels?

A lot of people would say that silent Hill 4: the room is the black sheep of the series. But I'd say it's this one:

Ignoring the lackluster music and enemies there's a really great original SILENT HILL story here. If you're skeptical just watch nitro rads video on it

Between RE2 and RE4 both being fan favorites I feel this one is generally forgotten about and almost never spoken of. It's just as memorable as the others and I don't understand why people seem to ignore it. It's kind of become my favorite not only for NEMESIS but I also think it kind of has underdog status.

Perhaps have too many things need to look pass to enjoy it is one of those reasons why people don't like it much.

Code Veronica is the real RE3 Capcom want to make, the only reason Nemesis been called RE3 is because they a deal with Sony which they have to fulfill.
And pretty sure it's not ignored by most of the fans, many do enjoy it alot for it's speedrun value.

Also it was basically unplayable at launch. I really do think it had a great silent Hill story though. Certainly the best one since 4.

Inb4 phipps with fallout 3

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is one of my favourite shooters of the 2010's and overlooked by basically everyone.

I've also got the apparently hot take that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was a good game. Granted, I've not played it on the PSP but on the PS3 Legacy Collection. Personally, I thought it was really fun. Sure the bossfights were garbage and the grinding to unlock the secret ending was shitty but other than that it was good. The characters were one of my favourite casts in any Metal Gear game and they played off eachother well, I liked the story and the cosy "slice of life" atmosphere and Big Boss actually had a good character arc. The only thing I think was a missed opportunity was embracing the 1970's millitary aesthetic. It was a little too modern for my tastes, I wanted full Vietnam style Cold War stuff.

Every Mega Man after 2 - I'd say 3 was pretty lazy but Mega Man titles after 2 are just as good if not better gameplay, weapons and music wise. Even the GameBoy versions are amazing.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories - "It's not Silent Hill" is right but it's still a great game with good narrative. Very emotional.

Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse - My favorite Castevania game. An extension of the Classicvania formula that does things better.

Zelda Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages - Not as emotional as Link's Awakening but great dungeon designs and solid Zelda titles overall.

Parasite Eve 2 - Mediocre story but solid title. I don't know another tank controlled 3rd person game that has utilizes environmental hazards the way PE2 does.

RE: Zero - Standard RE game with interesting mechanics. Boss fights can be annoying but all in all a solid title.
Recently replayed Code Veronica. Knife is great but otherwise the game is pretty forgettable.

No. People say the black sheep...they mean the first numbered games. All of the games after 4 are black sheep and 4 is the blackest sheep in the original pure bred sheep pen. Got it?

Nah downpour may have massive flaws but... well its kind of like fallout 2 in that it somehow both great and terrible all at once.

Anyways another underrated sequel is

I'd say it's just as great as any of the games preceding it. It's definitely got the most engaging story in the franchise.

Are you serious? It's a good game, but a shitty Hitman one.

Yes 100%. It's levels are a bit too far on the linear side but that doesn't make them bad levels. Plus it's got the best story since hitman 2 and the new gameplay mechanics are fun.

It tries to goes back to the style of Blood Money and for the most part succeeds despite being held back by always online. It's definitely got the best sandboxe gameplay since Blood Money.
Fixed

No, it doesn't. It has an offline mode which you can play normally. If you played online and went offline your progression would reset though.

Oh shit for real? Hearing about the online only thing was the sole reason I didn't buy it because I didn't wanna support such nonsense.

Hmm, would Descent 3 fall in this category?

I confess that I never played Descent 1 and 2 as at the time I was not really into FPS that lacked any story telling after having played Doom for a while.
For me the FPS genre became interesting again after Half Life (and lesser extend Unreal) came out which shows that FPS games can have story driven campaigns, either in game or through cutscenes and did not always revolve around shooting every baddy and finding the exit.

Edit: oh and slightly before Half Life when Lucasarts released Star Wars Dark Forces Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith.

I rather liked the Descent 3 campaign at the time but recently when I tried to replay it again I ran into various issues that did not make it so much fun any more.

Another one of the better games of the late 90s/Early 2000's was Homeworld Cataclysm.
I loved Homeworld 1 for its gameplay and using space as a backdrop (it really felt big and empty) and it also have a great space opera style storyline.
But Cataclysm took both the gameplay and the storyline a lot further (if Homeworld 1 was Battlestar Galactica/Star Wars then Cata was Star Trek) with the player now having to take on a mysterious new enemy that poses a threat to everyone.

Personally I found Cataclysm's storyline a lot more interesting than that of Homeworld 2 which tried to tell another story on the scope of Homeworld 1 but failed it in various ways. For one I did not like all the overdone mysticism in it which felt a little like the writers wanted to emulate Star Wars' Force but now with magical hyperdrives.

Descent 3 was pretty decent. Never felt it was underrated, although I guess it wasn't as big of a deal as Descent 1 and 2 were. By the time of Descent 3 other similar games appeared, and the novelty had worn off.

Hey Hassknecht, perhaps you should give Overload a try. It is a game similar to Descent 1 and 2 made by the makers of Descent.
