I'm currently near the end of the first Fallout game and I know there's a way to recruit people from the Followers of the Apocalypse to help out with that but for the life of me I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I talked to Nicole who told me to find the spy they had planted in the Cathedral. I go there and find Laura and ask her some questions. She tells me about everything and how to get into the basement. I go back to report to Nicole but there' no new dialog option. I've been going through every tutorial and walk through i can find on the game but I still can figure out how to get her to help me or what could possibly be preventing me from getting her to help me. Is there some sort of item or dialog I missed that activates this or anything I might have done to lock this off from me? Thanks!
Hey, I came here in search of help for a similar problem, and was surprised to see this thread and how recent it is. Hopefully both of us can find a solution, assuming you're still having trouble. Here's a steam thread I made for my issue. To copy-paste here:
So first off the one and only mod I have installed is the patch that adds children back into the game, downloaded from ModDB (this one). I don't have anything else installed, not Fixt or anything. This is my very first playthrough so I wanted to keep the experience as vanilla as possible, warts and all. Also, notably, I installed the child patch during my playthrough (upon learning that kids are missing); I did not start the game with it installed.
My problem is that, as can be seen in this screenshot, the four Followers you're supposed to get from Nicole to assist at the Cathedral don't spawn. What's odd is that they have their greeting dialogue, as can be seen. But they don't assist in fighting the Nightkin and are invisible and can't be interacted with. What's further strange is that when I leave the Cathedral, the usual "Nicole told us to return as soon as you left the Cathedral" text appears, but they are still invisible.
It's somewhat baffling because earlier in my playthrough they showed up fine (I was just too weak to fight the Nightkin, even with their help, so I went north to do sidequests); that's how I know they're supposed to be there. Note that I don't think I saved after asking Nicole for them that time. I think this was before I installed the child patch, though I don't remember. Reinstalling the game without the child patch hasn't worked, and neither has verifying integrity of game files. It also holds for all saves I've tried; if I load older saves and go talk to Nicole and then go to the Cathedral they still don't spawn.
Any advice would be appreciated. Loving the game so far but those Nightkin seem pretty tough without help.
Edit: Okay, I've confirmed that it's a playthrough thing. I started a new game and beelined all the way down to Boneyard, talked to Nicole, then went to Cathedral, and they show up as they should. The oldest save I have for my current playthrough still has the bug happen. Like I said though, there was a point where it worked fine for my current playthrough.
I was going to make my own thread but I guess there's no need to. Hopefully someone helps us.
By the way:
I think they're supposed to appear outside of the Cathedral as soon as you get there after talking to Nicole for the first time (the conversation where she tells you the password for Laura). No need to go back to Nicole.
Wait, so you already saw them? The game will remove them if you leave the location and enter a different map. This would explain why they are gone now.

Yeah, I saw them but as I recall I didn't save after that; I got annihilated by the Nightkin because I was underleveled and so loaded an older save to go grind elsewhere. This was a while before trying to revisit the Cathedral and getting the above bug.
Well they were decent for knocking down and distracting the Nightkin, but I think I can pull it off without them. Or I might try the diplomatic route if not. Thanks anyway.
Seems like an unfortunate design flaw of the first game. In all likelihood, the same thing happened to me to where they showed up the first time I went there and I honestly just didn't notice or something. Well the good news is that shortly after making this thread I managed to beat Fallout 1 so there's that.
