“Bethesda Softworks Can Suck It”

Morbus

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Following a brief mention of Diablo 3 on Bethesda producer Ashley Cheng's blog, Blizzard Guru has written a new article comparing Bethesda to Blizzard, and how Bethesda can "suck it":
I used to like Bethesda, it being the developer of Morrowind and all. Over the past few years however, Bethesda progress upwards as a “pretty good” game company came to a grinding halt, and its progress is now somewhere between stagnant and half past dead. Still, there’s a growing sense that someone at that company forgot to take Ritalin the morning they announced that isometric games are dead and that PC gaming is dying.

To confirm their position on the manner, Bethesda has:

# Completely reimagined Fallout to look like a Post-Nuclear version of Oblivion, much to every gamer’s chagrin
# Pissed off the majority of their fan base with ignorance, arrogance and misunderstanding of the Fallout franchise
# Signed shoddy deals with game journalists (what journalists?) to limit the flow of information with regards to Fallout 3
# Compounded their mistakes with lies towards the fan base about how the game isn’t anything close to being “Oblivion with guns”, despite the fact that several of those “journalists” confirmed that the game does indeed feel that way.
# Had a guy who has no idea what he’s talking about represent the company

Having said that, since Blizzard has absolutely no idea what they are doing releasing a 3D Isometric PC game, let’s see how they dug themselves into a hole:

# For the past few weeks Blizzard has had a front page splash of mysterious clues hinting towards their next game
# Each consecutive clue came closer to revealing the mystery, building an exponential amount of hype
# On June 28th in Paris, France at the WWI, Blizzard announced the development of Diablo III and revealed their new website, complete with two trailers, screenshots, and game lore, and have since been updating the website with more information
# Fans around the world got hyped about up the upcoming game, and communities were formed. The number of Diablo 2 players on Battle.net substantially increased

At the moment, Blizzard is in a PR hellhole. Vivendi stocks are plummeting because of the recent announcement of Diablo III, and several of its key designers were leaving in droves.

Or so Bethesda probably wishes.

Now excuse me while I go spend more money on horse armour and 15 minute quests.
Link: Bethesda Softworks Can Suck It @ Blizzard Guru

As I read this, the first thing I thought was "Hah! Owned!" in regards to Beth. Not the most cerebral of responses, but I think it fits in this situation.

I laughed hard (so hard that collegues were looking funny) at this..

"Pissed off the majority of their fan base with ignorance, arrogance and misunderstanding of the Fallout franchise "

is the line where I basicly stopped to laugh

if there's one company ignorant, arrogant and misunderstanding of their "true" fanbase it's blizzard.

Bethesda should wait until they have a clue before even thinking of criticizing how Blizzard treat their own franchises...

He seems to use "disappointed in conservative design" as a synonym for "they didn't turn it into an MMO". Fuck-a-doodle-doo.

Hahaha, the best way to defend yourself is to attack. Let's start the war! I'm waiting for Boyarsky's response! :D

Also, I love how Cheng calls Blizzard "conservative" while Bethesda simply decided with Fallout 3 to "do what they do best"...

Haha. Similar thoughts roamed my mind ever since D3's announcement. And, oh dear, i hope Bethesda's not trying to get into a bullfight with Blizzard.. Cheng's poorly veiled anguish could be the start of it. It's kinda pathetic that they reacted this way, to the fast-brewed comparisons made mostly by people who they themselves isolated from the franchise.. lolwut.

What the hell?

Okay, so who is this Blizzard guru guy?

I sure how more and more such comparisons will arise in the near future, because too many people swallowed the shit Bethesda have been putting out.

And Ashley Cheng can suck my cock. He was the one who said he'd like StarCraft 2 in first-person, you can be sure he'd like Diablo 3 in the same perspective too. He's a fucking moron, who actually has the nerve to criticize Blizzard for not sucking like Bethesda does.

if there's one company ignorant, arrogant and misunderstanding of their "true" fanbase it's blizzard.

Oh, for realz?! And how may that be?

@djmulder

He's obviously a troll. I mean, he's angry and then he tries to make us angry. Whatever.

Anyway, good points made all around by the news commentator.

At the moment, Blizzard is in a PR hellhole. Vivendi stocks are plummeting because of the recent announcement of Diablo III, and several of its key designers were leaving in droves.

Win.

lol, i didn't even stop to think about it but diablo III has effectively SLAUGHTERED the "isometric-R-dead" bs argument by bethesda

It's what they do best.

Seriously, they see it as a winning formula, and don't want to expand their capabilities (read risk) into areas they possibly might not have the success their current titles do.

The exact same thing came to my mind when Diablo 3 was announced. Why can't Fallout 3 be iso-TB? Oh. it's dated? Gimme a fuckin' break. People still play Diablo 2, people still play Fallout etc.

In 10 years will people still be playing Oblivion? Highly unlkely.

the thing that completely puzzles me is that fo3 has been entitled game of the year '08 when it's obvious that bethesda plays in a very different (read: lower) league than, for example, blizzard.

it's a shame that the more objective comments concerning fo3 are coming from unknown bloggers while the major media outlets praise it like there's no tomorrow. what the hell.

the diablo3 gameplay video makes me feel enthusiastic. i know what i'll be playing for months once it is released.

Something that would have solidified Blizzard Guru's statement even more, would be the Star Trek fan base also being alienated by ol' Bethesda.

I am disappointed that Blizzard has stayed on the conservative side in terms of design with their updates to Diablo and Starcraft

... wow.

It had crossed my mind that Bethesda's drones would try to undermine Diablo 3 based on "innovation" to sustain their lame argument against iso.

What never even ocurred to me was that the fucking PRODUCER would be stupid enough to come out and do it. Bravo, Beth, you're just as good in hiring people as in designing games.

It will be interesting to see how many of the professional gaming journalists will be seen making comments both about how great it is that Diablo 3 is staying true to it's style while, in another article, simultaneously praising Fallout 3 for it's bold steps forward from "that tired worn out game play of yester-year."

Keep an eye on that, it'll be the most solid slam-dunk that will expose the hypocrisy in the game journalism industry.
