8th generation of consoles

I think we're definitely going to see a new Xbox this e3. Kotaku has been posting some interesting rumors in the past few weeks. One of them said that the next Xbox won't read any used/second hand game discs. So yeah, console gaming becomes even more expensive, one more reason for you PC gamers out there to stick with Steam and it's awesome sales.

I heard that rumor too. I couldn't imagine them rigging the system up like that. I would never buy a system if it doesn't play used games. That is just me though. I will probably buy whatever Sony puts out this time around, while continuing to upgrade my Pc to current standards.

Sony has been very silent, so I doubt we will be seeing a new Playstation anytime soon.

That would put gamespot out of business for sure. I walked in one the other day for the first time in at least two years and their stock was composed of roughly 50% used games. They didn't even carry a PC game other than Skyrim and The Old Republic.

Yeah I heard that. I know I will buy a PS3 again because I want a Blueray player. I like how the PS2 is still widely used. It goes to show how great Sony is at maintaining support for their consoles. Anyone still playing the old Xbox? I know I'm not.

The idea of a place like this existing hurts my insides.

All the Gamestop's I go to have quite a few PC games. More than Best Buy at least.

Same here. A whole double-sided rack of them, around 60-100. And this was a tiny mall version of the store too. They don't let you trade in or sell pc games though, for obvious reasons

now if the X-Bogus is doing the same then we have a nother year where we can use our shitty hardware to play the games in their maximum settings. Good thing for me though. Since I dont have to update any of my old hardware to play all the games - If I want it not that I play much anyway.

No PS4 this year. Sony will be concentrating on PS Vita and the PS3, which is a smart move.

A smart move if they want to go bankrupt? Hasn't the Vita already failed?

They said the sales were predicted to be a little low, but they have not admitted to it failing.

I think developers should be in no hurry to move on to the next generation. I think we've entered an age where games cost way too much to make than they need to, and I think if all the AAA games looked as good as Battlefield 3 does now for the next couple of years, the gaming public at large would still be perfectly happy. With high-budget games, publishers and developers feel the financial hits harder if their games flop in terms of sales or if they're pirated to hell and back.

I like to say that we shouldn't be praying to see certain games flop. But perhaps it would do the industry some good if the next Call of Duty game does. It could teach publishers that deeper pockets doesn't necessarily make a better game, and that they shouldn't be giving devs the blank check. Economics 101 teaches us that businesses should be going after bigger rewards while minimizing costs.

Wikipedia -

On December 17, 2011, the PlayStation Vita was launched in Japan with 325,000 units sold in the first few days after the launch. Sales dropped 78% in the 2nd week ending on December 25, 2011 to 74,000 units sold.[63] PlayStation Vita sales continued to drop in subsequent weeks, reaching an all-time low of under 14,000 units in the 9th week ending February 15, 2012.

The First Edition Bundle was released in North America on February 15, 2012.

Sony must be hurting with this, the consoles generally make a loss, which is covered by the sales of games, but when the console itself fails to sell, then they're up shit creek.

They had the worst RoI on the PS3 AND the worst sales. This whole generation was a catastrophe for them, which is why it's shocking they'd be the last to move on. They should rush to the next generation with a solid plan. Nintendo's tepid Wii U plan shouldn't scare anyone.

What is Nintendo thinking with that Wii U crap? It looks awful. I love Nintendo but holy shit am I unimpressed.

So releasing a PS4 with a bunch of shitty launch titles could prevent that? They could also stop shipping PS3 units as well while they're at it. Boy...

You can't exactly rush anywhere with a solid plan, when you rush, your plan generally ends up being crap.

True. But a bunch of good exclusives could save them, but still the chances of this console selling well are very very slim. People will definitely forget about it once they see some shiny unreal 4 powered games running on the next Xbox.

That's obviously not what I meant by rush. Solid plan would include good launch titles. They should have been the first to prepare and step into the next generation because this generation was a loss. Instead they tried to ride this out further with failed peripherals and now a failed handheld. So rather than cutting their losses and moving on, they're setting themselves up to fail again.

I loved Sony at the time they released this little gray box -

I just don't care anymore, I think the 3 big boys, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have done as much harm as good to the industry - just saying... :look:

it market the end of PC gaming ...

what a nice time it was when the biggest console was still the Super-Nintento.

Now ... all those fucking ports. And on top of that game companies see a "pirate" in every PC user so we have to deal with fucked up DRMs and who-konws-what-else : /

*le sigh* those people really do everything to kill PC gaming for me. What have I done to them that they hate me so much D:
